1995 Ford Escort 1.8 Diesel 55 Lost Power And Wont Start

Hi all

Last week I was driving my 1995 ford escort 1.8 diesel 55 car van (UK model) when it suddenly lost all power. Luckily it happened only 100 yards from the house. I pushed it home but couldn't start it. I took off the starter and had it reconditioned. I charged up the battery also. Made no difference. Still not starting. When I insert the key, the glow plug and battery lights on the dashboard light up but there's nothing from the engine. I had put on a new alternator about 2 months ago and everything was fine til last week. Does anyone have any ideas about what I can do?

Any help will be greatly appreciated,
