Asking advice on front/rear dash cam...

Featured Replies

A friend has asked me advice on a matched front & rear dash cam. He doesn't want to trail 5m cable between the 2 and is looking fore something wireless to connect both, either BluTooth or WiFi. Thought it would be pretty easy but Google hasn't been much help. Anyone have direct experience of such a setup, or point me in the right direction?

How will the rear camera be powered? Even if it can transfer data wirelessly it will still need a 12v cable for power.

That's useful. Perhaps there are camera pairs that can share data wirelessly.

If not they could buy two separate cameras that can both use WiFi or Bluetooth to connect to a phone.

I bought one off Amazon several weeks ago (just after i acquired the car and it's still sat there in its box, you need a magnifying glass to read the instructions, it's supposed to cover front, back and sides, and has a "sim" card to record which i think you can remove and download it to your laptop or pc, (wish I'd had one when i had a smack in the old C-Max! would have saved me a lot of back & forth explaining with the insurer) as said it's running the cable that's putting me off, will it be long enough etc,

I think he may end up paying Halfords £80 installation fee. I thought it would be so simple to get 2 x units connected via WiFi or BluTooth - obviously not, wonder why....

There are a few options. The simple way, as I have fitted to my daughters Polo, is to have a front dashcam with a rear mounted lens. The rear image is not as good as the front and can be obscured by the occasional rear seat passenger, but it does it's job.

Another option is one I used on my old Disco'. Bought for £15 at a car show. It had proper wires not the ultra thin USB type, so was easily wired to an ignition live, towbar in this case. Not sure how, BT probably, but signal was sent to front. It worked well, but oddly it occasionally picked up interference and you would see random images, I had Coronation St once !

Option 3, as suggested, just fit an independent dashcam and wire to supply at the back end.

He looked at the Nextbase one where you clip a rear view attachment to it, but with frequent rear seat passengers, thought impractical. No use with self fitment as he's just not that way inclined LOL (Not everyone likes pottering with cars) We both thought with so much 'connectivity' swimming around, this would be such an easier task than is proving...
