Focus MK2.5 - Unable to open boot from handle nor keyfob

Featured Replies

I cannot open the boot on my Focus MK2.5.

The boot handle does not open it, nor does the keyfob. When using either I cannot hear the latch at all.

Any ideas what to check next?

Likely to be a fuse.

Hi,

Usually it is the tailgate button that fails on these.

Can you remember whether the key fob just unlocked it or whether it 'popped' it open? Sadly it's been so long since I had a Mk2.5 I can't remember. If it used to pop open but doesn't now then that would suggest a latch fault rather than a button fault.

I had the same problem . It was the latch mechanism on the tailgate.

So, the keyfob unlocked and locked the doors and boot using the related buttons and when the boot button was pressed, it popped the boot open.

Is there a good way to test if voltage is evening getting to the latch to open it? Or maybe it is easier to just replace it and find out...

Okay, this is helpful thank you. I will just order a new latch then.

Good point, I will also check the related fuses too then. Thanks.

Quicker & easier just to replace the latch.

The problem now is getting the tailgate open in order to do that.

Thank you!

Yeah, I think I can get to the bolts securing the striker, maybe 😅

For anyone who runs into this, the problem was the tailgate latch failing.

To get the boot open and replace it:

  1. Access the boot from inside the car (fold the rear seats and climb in).

  2. Loosen the lower plastic trim under the boot door:

    • Pull out the 4 plastic clips.

    • Remove the two plastic covers on either side of the striker.

    • Under those covers are 2 bolts holding the striker to the body. Remove them.

  3. Once the striker is loose, you should be able pull the trim forward slightly and then lift the boot open (you may need to pull up slightly on the trim to unclip it as you open the boot door).

With the boot open:

  1. Remove the inner tailgate trim panel.

  1. Unplug the latch connector and remove the 3 bolts holding the latch.

  2. The latch will still be locked onto the striker.

    • Peel back the plastic cover on the latch.

    • Remove the single pentalobe security screw.

    • Pull off the top section of the latch (with the connector).

    • Inside is a black plastic lever, push it sideways to release the latch.

Install the new latch and reassemble everything in reverse.
