Resting Battery Fiesta MHEV

Featured Replies

Hi, Fiesta ST Line X T MHEV 2020 resting battery at 11.8v after being parked up overnight. Should the battery be replaced? Cheers.

Probably.

But you can try giving it an overnight charge from the mains to extend it's life a bit further first.

Bit confused here. Profile says Fiesta Zetec S 2015, query relates to a 2020 ST-Line X and it's posted in the Kuga forum!😀

FWIW, my 2018 ST-L X (non-MHEV) often showed below 12v at rest almost from new. Gave it regular charges every 5/6 weeks, no issues, so it's worth trying a "smart" charger (e.g. Maypole, Noco, C-tek) which seem to be essential kit these days.

My present car has been pretty much the same.story.

Very long thread here on Fiesta Mk 8 battery issues if you have an hour or so to kill:

Considering the number of cars in this thread so far I don't feel so bad adding another... 😄

Battery has died on my Golf again. Jump started and ran for about 20 minutes the other day. Next day the alarm goes off...I plip it to unlock and there isn't even enough power to unfold the mirrors. Really needs a proper mains charge but living upstairs makes it impossible so far. We don't have letter boxes and the extension cable is too thick to run under a door and close it. Been wondering whether there are any thin or 'flat' extensions for this purpose but can't find any. Interested to hear any other suggestions as I feel this is the last chance to save the battery now.

That was my problem to some extent when running an extension lead through the letterbox. Managed to find a flatt(ish) socket in the end.

Cable - I doubt if you'd find a ready made up extension lead.

Most of them use a round flexible cord which is pretty thick as you say, and often 13A. I wonder if you could concoct something using flat cable, might go under a closed door if there's a bit of a gap.

Ribbon cable also comes to mind, but don't know if you could get that in a rating sufficient for a charger - but most of the ones we discuss on here are only 5A.

I'm up at our caravan at the mo, so can't check, but Iirc the "input" leads on my chargers are flat and pretty small. You only need something like that with a socket at one end and plug on the other to, in effect, extend the input lead on the charger to the nearest point where you can plug into a socket or a normal extension lead/reel.

Plenty of cable stuff on Amazon, EBay etc but ideally you need to have a look/measure. I often find a wander round B&Q, Wickes etc, triggers a brainwave!

So I've measured the gap under the door today. Not as much as I thought! It's around 4mm, but difficult to get an accurate measurement. Round cable on the extension is about 8mm.

A quick Google suggests that standard 2.5mm twin & earth is around 6mm which would be too thick. Don't suppose anyone has some spare laying around to check? I can't get to a store to measure unfortunately.

Back home again! The reel of 2.5mm twin+earth laying around in my garage is 4mm at its narrowest/flattest. 1.5 would be narrower but I don't have any to measure. These are used in fixed wiring though, such as are buried in the walls.

However neither my Noco Genius 5 or C-Tek MX-S 5 are earthed so you only need 2 core, no earth, so a 2.5 might work, 1.5 very probably would. My Noco is only 5A (the plug actually has a 3A fuse) and the input lead is only 2 core (2 x0.75mm, no earth) just under 3mm overall at narrowest*

(**My C-TekMXS-5 has exactly the same input cable size(probably from the same Chinese factory).

The snag seems to be that advertisers quote the maximum dimension, not the minimum!

Thanks Roger.

Although the flat grey cable is usually buried in walls, I don't think there's any reason not to use it in place of round cable.

I was thinking of just a short extension lead to get past the door, then plug the normal extension reel into that on the outside. (I know extension into extension isn't ideal).

Don't really want to use 1.5mm in case I have to use anything else out there in future.

Apart from not being as flexible as a "flex" of course so you don't want to be bending it too often - from what you say, it doesn't sound as if you will, though.
