ford focus coolant loss

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Recently my focus has been losing coolant and car goes into limp mode, no visible signs of leaking coolant, had a pressure test done on coolant bottle and no leaks, any ideas?

Thanks

Tony

Is it going into limp mode because it's overheating or is that a separate fault? There is likely to be a Ford specific fault code triggered with limp mode, which you can see using Forscan, not a generic OBD2 reader.

As a pressure test confirms the cold system is sealed then I would try a new cap as the next cheapest and easiest part. (Cap is removed during pressure testing).

If it still leaks after that then there is likely to be crack in metal part that only opens up when the engine expands in heat. Either a faulty EGR cooler or a crack in the cylinder head. This can be tested using a CO2 tester in the coolant bottle but the engine will need to be warmed up first. If the coolant is full it will overflow while waiting for it to warm up, so best done while coolant level is low, but still visible in bottle.
