Ford Focus mk4 oil pump wet belt replacement

Featured Replies

I am the happy owner of a 2019 mk4 Focus, and I have done nearly 115k miles in it so far and all has been great.

However the last few times I’ve changed oil, I noticed a few rubber particles in the oil, which I think means it is time for a new oil pump wet belt.

The motor in my car is the “Dragon” 1.5L petrol, with the integrated balance shaft in the block and a chain driving the camshafts, but sadly still has a wet oil pump belt. The engine has been built on 16-04-2019:

I got a quote from a Ford workshop for just under 3000 euro. I knew it was going to be an expensive job, and combined with the fact that I honestly don’t trust workshops that much to do a decent job, I have pretty much decided to do it myself. I have a good mechanical knowledge, and have maintained my previous car myself for over 12 years, including timing and head gasket replacement, so I don’t think it’s too crazy to think I could do this job myself.

I have the service procedures to do the job, but there are a couple of steps where I would like a bit more knowledge, especially if someone has done this job before.

  1. How difficult is the harmonic balancer to pull off the crankshaft? I'm asking because I saw a video of someone struggling really hard to get it off, and using so much heat that the rubber in the balancer ended up melting?? Shouldn’t a standard 3 leg puller be able to get it off?

  2. Does the harmonic balancer need to be aligned to the crank? The service information doesn’t mention anything about this, so my guess is no. The key in the crank only aligns the balance shaft gear and the timing chain gear (correct?) so there is nothing to align the harmonic balancer.

  3. How do you get the timing chain gear and balance shaft gear off the crankshaft? In the service information they just show 2 pictures saying “remove these”. From what I’ve seen other places, those don’t just slide off easy. This video shows them not just "falling" off https://youtu.be/CEzqz8C4lxw?t=1364 (he also does it completely wrong, but that's besides the point).

Those are pretty much my questions for the procedure itself. I already have the tools for the timing and locking of the crankshaft.

I’ve made a list of the parts I will need, but if someone has access to check if these are the correct parts, I would massively appreciate it!

In the quote I got from the Ford workshop, they didn’t intend to replace the chain tensioner as they said it doesn’t get worn, is that fair, and can I also skip replacing it? They also didn’t intend to replace the crank gear, but all the aftermarket kits seem to include it?

I have reduced the number of bolts I am replacing, to just all the bolts inside the engine (for the chain guides), the 2 M10 bolts for the chain cover and a new crank bolt.

I don’t really see why Ford wants to discard ALL the bolts in the chain cover and the oil pan (almost 130 euro just in those bolts). They aren’t aluminum bolts, and aren’t super high torqued, so I really don’t see any need to replace them.

In the quote from Ford, they included a primer for the mating surfaces (2718620). Do I need that? And what sealant should I use to re-seal the chain cover and oil pan? Do I need the Ford OE stuff?

It seems hard to find people that have done this, which maybe is a good thing, since it could indicate, that not many people have had to get this done :)

I know this “Dragon” 1.5L is in quite a few different models including the Fiesta ST, Kuga, Bronco, Escape and Puma, so I’m crossing my fingers that I find someone who knows how this is done.

Any and all information is welcome! Thank you
