Horrified to find mouse scurrying around under hood of van

Featured Replies

This is all the worse as I am a van dweller, so not just using to drive and park it and, but is meant to be my sanctuary and so having rodents scrabbling around on it is horrible when I want to relax.

I park in a regular spot and it does have rodents all about as it is very rural so I am not able to just change where I park, as apart from this issue it is a good situation for now.

I am wondering how I can stop them coming on? I have not tried the peppermint oil yet but see that is a popular choice and seems lots of stars for it on amazon reviews.

As an out of the box idea I was wondering if I could use vehicle jacks to lift the van off the ground so then they wouldn't be able to climb if it was smooth steel? I wonder if it would be secure enough to climb in myself while jacked though?

I had thought about making some kind of wall of plastic or metal around the van but think this would be very difficult to seal off all points, including underground so they wouldn't dig. I know that the ground around is riddled with them because when I dig pretty much in any direction they will come running out. I was thinking I would have to sheet metal the ground too, which is not impossible and might even try it if other cheaper solutions fail.

I tried removing grass which is a recommendation as they apparently don't like open spaces but they just burrow into the ground so that has not been any kind of deterrent that I can see. When I was doing that and digging down that is when I saw them keep running out and there were holes again just the next day even! so seems like an effort in futility doing that. That is why I say sheet metal would be good to stop them digging in around and under the van. Metal because I don't have planning to be putting down permanent stuff like concrete so want it to be moveable without damaging ground underneath.

One might say this is a desperate and depraved place I am at but even housed people are only a few feet from rodents, it is just that with walls and concrete you can seal yourself off from them easier. My mum lives in the quintessential middle class home (not where I am) and I have seen a rat just at the bottom of her garden so it isn't like it is different from that, just that most have a larger buffer between themselves and the great outdoors.

Any ideas and experience for what works? I read that the noise emitting deterrents are just hype and don't work.
