Can oil leak through Mk2 1.6 Petrol flywheel bolts?

Featured Replies

I have an engine oil leak that started after a rear crankshaft main seal was replaced when the clutch was changed.

The leak could be due to a badly fitted seal.

I have read that oil can leak through the flywheel bolt threads on some engines if sealant is not used on the threads when they are fitted.

Is this possible with the Mk2 1.6 Petrol HWDA engine?

As far as I know the flywheel bolt holes in the crankshaft are not through and through on the Sigma engines. There is no need to use sealant on the flywheel bolts apart from the usual Loctite thread locker.

Other Ford models like for example the 2.0 EcoBoost do have the flywheel bolt holes in the crankshaft through and through. On these the sealant needs to be used to prevent oil leaking through the threads.
