I have a 2018 (2017 model) mustang s550 5.0

I am having trouble updating the sat nav , as it is a USA built car with a US vin. no. The website says unable to process , try again .

I do and same result.

Any ideas ?

Does the car currently have USA maps installed?

It is important to know that a USA SYNC 3 satnav APIM only has 32 GB of storage. The full EU maps requires an APIM with 64 GB of storage. This means that it is not possible to install the full EU maps on a USA APIM. You can only install part of the EU maps on a USA APIM.

Apart from the difference in storage size there are also some other challenges to be able to install EU maps on a USA APIM.

If it is a UK vehicle that was sold new in the UK, it cannot have a US VIN number.

The Ford VIN numbering system contains information like Manufacturer, Vehicle type. Body type, Production facility, Production Month, Production Year and Vehicle serial number.


A Mustang that has been manufactured in the US has a VIN number that is similar to the US vehicles. This however does not mean that the vehicle has a US VIN number. Since the vehicle is manufactured specifically in accordance to the European/UK specifications it is considered to be a European spec vehicle. A SYNC 3 based vehicle that is manufactured for the European/UK market has a 64 GB APIM whilce vehicles manufactured for the US market only have a 32 GB APIM.

All Ford vehicles that are manufactured for the European/UK markets are fully supported by Ford Europe/UK. Therefore, it should be possible to download the updated maps from Ford.


I suggest avoiding the update system on the Ford website. This used to work perfectly fine but approximately 2 Years ago several known errors were introduced. The Ford update system is simply rubbish, and Ford seems not to be interested to fix it properly. There are multiple signs that SYNC 3 is reaching the end of support soon so I would be surprised if Ford comes with a fix. The update software itself is available on the Ford servers but without a way to download it and create the USB drive you cannot use it.

Another disadvantage is that Ford does not consider the older SYNC 3 APIM suitable to run the latest software versions. A 2017/2018 APIM can only be updated to the latest SYNC 3.0 software while the hardware is perfectly capable to run the latest SYNC 3.4 software. In some cases Ford does also not offer the latest maps for the older software versions.

Years ago, Cyanlabs developed a much better, faster and more dependable update method. The Cyanlabs SYN3Updater. This tool is far superior to the Ford system and downloads the required update files directly from the Ford servers. In other words: Cyanlabs offers the exact same SYNC 3 software (both system software and map updates) but combines it with an update method that actually works. Cyanlabs also has the ability to update the older APIM versions to the latest 3.4 software.

FYI, there's a US site for Sync3 updates. My VIN is recognized there as having the latest software (so it must have been updated through Ford UK) but then their Map update page says my VIN is not recognized. Maybe you can use that to confirm that you car also is not US.
