confusing wiper stalk and lack of clarity from manual

Featured Replies

I recently purchased a Focus 1.0 ecoboost MHEV 125 active edition reg year Jan 2022. I wanted to find out what the functions on the wiper stalk did

When I looked in the manual i saw the following

image.png

however the wiper stalk in my car looks like this

focus wiper stalk.jpg

there is absolutely no correlation between the 2 and yet the manual claims it is the correct one for the VIN of my car.

Can someone help me out and clarify each aspect of the wiper stalk - with reference to the photo please

I have rain sensor switched on in the settings

Many thanks

The twisty bit on the left sets the sensitivity to rain. With it in the down position as shown in the photo it needs a lot of rain to activate the wipers, if you twist it upwards towards the top of its setting it needs less rain to activate the wipers. Usually you find a setting that suits you and then leave it alone.

The stalk can be lifted up or pushed down, it has 4 positions:

  • Push it down to its bottom position for a quick wipe, it will spring back to the off position.

  • Lift it once for automatic wipers, you can leave it in this position.

  • Lift it again for continuous wipers, rarely needed.

Pull the stalk towards the steering wheel to wash and wipe the front screen.

Push the stalk away from the steering wheel to wash and wipe the rear screen.

The little switch on the end of the stalk operates the rear wiper. The bottom switch position is off, lift the switch once for intermittent rear wiper and lift it twice for continuous rear wiper.

A:

Pull the stalk towards you = Front washer jets.
Push the stalk from you = Rear washer jets.
Rotary control = Sensitivity of the rain sensor (auto wipers active ) or wiper interval (auto wipers not present or active)

B:

Push down = Single wipe front windscreen wipers.
Push up to the 1st position = Auto wipers/interval selected.
Push up to the 2nd position = Permanent wipe front windscreen wipers at slow speed.
Push up to the 3rd position (if present) = Permanent wipe front windscreen wipers at high speed.
Side button up = Rear wiper off
Side button down = Rear wiper on interval

Who designs wiper stalks at Ford? Having rear wash on a completely separate part to rear wipe is baffling.

The Mk2 Focus stalks were unintuitive as well. When they first came out I remember people regularly driving along with the rear wiper going and thinking the front wash wipe was broken. Pull back on those was rear wiper, two pulls for rear wash. Front wash just a random single button on the end!

VW do wiper stalks far more intuitively. 1 pull for front wash. 1 push for rear wipe. 2 pushes for rear wash.

the way the manual reads on later cars seems they fixed an issue she had when I put rain sensing wipers on her car.... it causes a muddle up on the older Mk2

if you have auto wipers max sensitivity adjustment for rain, is 100% opposite switch position for non rain sensing intermittent wipe

so short duration intermittent wipe position (for quite a lot of rain), will suddenly bring you little response to rain when your next car has auto wipers

Ah, it was all so simple once. My 1962 Mini had a switch with 2 positions - on or off! Washer was a manual pump like this.

Well, compared to the latest Puma (MK2.5) the Focus wiper stalks are perfectly intuitive.

The latest Puma is much worse. It no longer has a wiper stalk at the right side of the steering wheel. All wiper function are integrated into the indicator stalk at the left side of the steering wheel.

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of driving my mum's new full options Puma MK2.5 ST-Line X home from the dealership in Germany. When it started raining, I noticed the missing wiper stalk. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to activate the front and rear wipers.

Oh, that is strange! The Gen-e has the gearshift and EPB on the right stalk. I guess it's cheaper just to make one left stalk for both EV and ICE models.

I was just driving hers and couldn't find the stupid wipers multiple times - thank goodness ford have now fitted its where its meant to be on the left - does the high beam switch now work like a normal car yet ?

Which other common cars have wipers on the left? I can't remember any of my previous cars having it there.

High beam flash on modern Puma is also on the wiper stalk, with all of the wash and wipe functions. But that is just push for on, or pull for flash, which I would consider normal.

Japanese cars had them on the left and the Indicators on the right, I've driven a few imports in New Zealand and the West Indies and it took me a while to get back to our side when returning.

I'm not sure but if they still do so.

Edit - Got my left and right confused for a moment. 🙄

Both of my Toyotas had wipers on the right, have just double checked wiper stalks on ebay. So still not sure I've driven any car with wipers on the left so far.

Suzukis had the indicators on the right stalk on Japanese made jeeps and on the left on Spanish made ones . That was a little confusing . That was in the 1990's

I think you're just too young, Tom.😀

I'm sure we had a thread somewhere on when the changeover happened. I'd put it around late 70s early 80s, but it differed between manufacturers, BL being quite late as I recall. You can see the l/h wiper controls on this shot of a 1970s Marina below:

Later had a 1982 Metro and by then the wipers were on the right.

17790246998852253077710768955805.jpg

in the good old days the indicator was on the opposite side to the gear lever - Japanese cars still adhere to this as they have RHD

UK used to be correct but with Europe we rolled over and did it wrong - its been wrong for so long it now feel right and the correct japanese setup seems weird

I guess the idea was so you could play with the indicators whilst changing gear

not sure if that drives Mercedes, but as most are auto (so no gear changing) the wipers are always on the left - indeed its the same stalk as the indicators and works perfectly doing both...

and high beam should be pushing the stalk away from you - and flashing the lights pull towards - the WORST feature on the mk2 Focus is the mental wrong for the sake of being wrong high-beam set up

Ah, so it's modern Mercedes with left hand wipers? One of the few common makes I haven't owned or driven.

It's been so long since I drove a Mk2 Focus I couldn't remember how high beam was on those.

Some Teslas also, if a button counts:

Wipers and Washers

You can access wiper settings by touching the wiper button on the steering wheel.

The left side of the steering wheel with an arrow pointing to the wiper button

  • Press the wiper button to wipe the windshield. If the wiper is already operating at a wiper setting and is not set to Auto, pressing the wiper button cycles through speeds. Wiper speeds cycle as follows: I > II > III > IIII > III > II > I.

  • Press and hold the wiper button to spray washer fluid onto the windshield. After releasing the button, the wipers perform
