What Hid's To Get

Featured Replies

Alrite Guys,

looking into HID's and am a bit concerned as to what ones to get.

I understand the colour temprature roughly and think that 5000k would be the best to get in terms of least likely to get stopped by the police.

But what about 35w vs 55w, obviously i want to do this once, and not be dissapointed with the kit i get, so would like some help choosing a kit.

I have heard that 55w could burn the wiring harness on the car as it is not designed to take that much load, and the heat in the actual light unit would be too much.

So any help would be appreciated.

What watt (35 or 55)

What temp (4000, 5000, 6000?)

Good suppliers or kits to buy

Looking to spend about £200

Thanks alot !

In my car i've got 6k 35Watt HIDS, they are amazing!

I paid quite a premium to get the best kit possible and with a guarantee, I've got this kit; http://www.hids4u.co.uk/h7-35w-ultimate-xenon-hid-conversion-kit.html

Make sure if you order them to specify that you need to bulb clips that are supplied free of charge and then you will have this kit working in minutes! They didn't supply me with the clips because they did not realise the fiesta requires them but they sent them next day delivery free of charge for me.

what are these "chips" you speak of? i bought some 35w 8000k slim ballasts and they seem to work brilliantly other than flicker the tiniest bit

The metal clip bracket thing that the h7 bulb usually plugs into and twists to lock in place, save messing with your own they provide you with two pre cut new ones that just slide over the HID Cables and secure the 'bulb' in place. You can get kits for like £35 off ebay which I know many people have used and are fine, I just wanted the guarantee and ensure I was getting the highest quality as using it on a newish car.

I think HIDS in the fez look awesome with the projector lenses gives it more of an executive car look :)

can you buy these metal clips seperatly ?

These are the ones they sent me, bit steep at £14.99 tbh but like I said I got them for free with my kit

Unfortunately, there is already proper legislation tabled to come into effect in early 2012, to make aftermarket HID kits fail the UK MoT. So, I shall have to reinstate my old H4's temporarily, next year, for my 1st MoT, then replace the 4300K BI-XENON's I have had for more than a year, and notified to the insurance Co.

Perhaps my insurance Co. will crib once the law comes in force, but as my 35Watt burners are only 50% brighter than those wildly uprated filament bulbs, I may resort to the PIAA HE303's I fitted briefly. I would prefer to keep the burners, as I will probably never have a blown lamp, and my Mk 6.5 Fiesta is a serious bother to replace front bulbs in. The 55watt burners have a poor reputation regarding glare, although HIDS4U claim to have developed their own bulbs, which are very controlled in this respect.

P.S., I paid a proper mechanic for 3 hours labour, to fit my set, and align them on MoT equipment. I have never been "flashed" by another road user. The 4300 deg Kelvin colour temperature is exactly what beemers, etc, fit. (there are now German-made burners of 5000 deg Kelvin, as noted in Autoexpress Mag.) Most kits use Chinese-made burners, but reliable Uk stockists hold spares, and source very carefully.

I'll worry about the legality of my HIDS when my MOT is due in two years time

I've had the beam pattern checked and been told its fine and no-one has flashed me, 6k isn't even that bright imo

You lot do realise that swapping the lights out after the MOT could still cause you problems. The car has to be roadworthy (ie complies with the MOT) at all times during the 12 months of an MOT, not just the day it goes into the test. Purposefully modifying the car outside the MOT regulations could invalidate your insurance as well.
