Hi all,

I collected my "new" 52 plate Mondeo 130 TDCI on Boxing day and the only main problem I've found with it is that the unlock button on the key doesn't work. The other two buttons work fine, but there's no click when you press the unlock button and the car does nothing no matter how hard I press the button.

I've done a little bit of looking around online and seen that people say you can buy a new remote and just link it with your car, but you have to have other keys etc... I only have one remote key and one key without a remote.

Can I do this, or do I have to go to Ford to ask them about it? Surely the buttons are susceptible to breaking so it shouldn't be a major thing to repair/replace. We used to have a fleet of Transits at my last job and there was different buttons broken on different keys for most of the vans so it clearly happens quite easily, but the boss never bothered getting things like that fixed. He'd just tell us to use the door lock.

Like I say, when you get out of the car, the lock button works no problem at all, and the boot unlock button works fine too, but the main unlock button does nothing at all.

Any ideas?

Did the car come with an owners manual ?

Instructions for pairing keys and remote openers should be in there, if it didn't come with one I'm sure someone will post the instructions for you.

Ok, on reading the manual (apologies by the way, I didn't think something like that would be noted in the manual) it mentions turning the ignition on and off several times using the first key till it beeps, then pressing a button on all the new fobs to be coded including the original.

I'm just not sure what to do about that coz I'm trying to replace the original remote. The key will stay the same, it's juse the buttons/fob I need to change.

Can this be done seperate from the actual key? For example if I remove the buttons/fob from the key, could I then code up a new fob and press a button on the original fob, then just clip the new fob onto the key? Can I trust the service desk at my local Ford dealership to tell me what I have to do to fix my problem without telling me all I can do is get their onsite wizard to do something with special Ford tools on a special key only available from rock 200m below sea level in the Himalaya.

the main question i need to know the answer to is, does your remote have a glass tube transponder ship in it, if it does then you do NOT need to visit your dealer when you get a new remote as this can be swapped and then all you will have to do is link the fob to the central locking for your car

if you have the black chip in your remote then you will have to visit a key coding specialist, i.e a locksmith to get them to code the key to the immobiliser

if you are unsure on what i mean then post a picture of the key fob once it has been removed from the horseshoe blade (i need to see the bit hidden by the blade i.e if it was hanging on a hook it would be the bottom)

I just split the key and it has what looks like a small clear LED in a plastic enclosure at the bottom. Is that any help or do you need a picture?

With regards to the two working keys often required in various versions of the reprogramming instructions, does the non-remote key class as a working key? I have one remote key (with a broken Unlock button) and a non-remote key (blue tab in corner)?

thats the bit, you can buy a new remote and swap that chip over and save yourself about 75 quid in programming, you can reprogramme the central locking in about 15 seconds aswell

if your buying the remote from your ford dealer i would nip round to their workshop door and say to one of the techs youll bung them a tenner to swap it over for you, as i can guarantee theyve done it 100's of times

Regarding the fobs, how do you rate the ones off the likes of eBay? Any good? Anything I should look out for?

Also is it better to get the Ford techs to do the swap over of the chip or can I do it myself? What's the risk?
