Filling Up

Featured Replies

I limped the car to fill up tonight and at that point the clock said 10 miles, I put in 39.72 and being a petrol (42 litres) that's 2.28 left!!

Whenever I fill up I usually end up putting in around 39 litres

But there is always a little more than what it states left as there is some in the fuel lines etc

Kris

Most I put in is 39 I think, which is 1 litre left as its a 40 litre tank on the diesel.

Cost me 45 I think.

I cocked up, as it stopped short of 50, and eased it along, and hit £50.01!

36.91 - 40l tank on diesel so only 3.09 left and worse to run out in a diesel than petrol!

In my old car 38.24 out of 40, in the current one 39.79 out of 42.

Never managed to get over 40L in a fillup, normally 38/39 if im really in the red.

Both my g/f fiesta and mine we have managed to get exactly 42 litres in our cars but not always (42 litre tanks) (Petrol)

Jamie

cant rememebr what it is full on mine..i try and run no more than 2/3rds full to help MPG.

I did once though do 35 miles once the clock said I had 0 miles left...actually me best mate did...i was asleep!! LOL!

This was a few weekends back.. it'd cost more now...

The closest the Fiesta got to actually running out, was running on nothing but what was in the lines.

I remember about 10 months ago the needle was on the empty mark, and we got the the garage, filled up fully, and it said 41.98 litres... It is a 42 litre tank!

39.85 is the most I've topped up. I always get a bit worried when the trip meter reads zero miles.

Apologies for bumping an old thread, but it's just cost me £55 to fill up! OK I was so empty the needle was almost past the red, trip computer said I had 10 miles left (it chimed the scary chime at me as I turned off the main road! :( ). 41.6litres. On the plus side, I got 52mpg out of that last tank, 1.4TDCi Mk6.5. :)

Mine said it had 10 miles left, just worked it all out, and I would have had 18.8324472!

You should see my spreadsheet, has lots of info like this on ;)

On average I fill up with 56miles remaining on dash, on average I actually have 75miles left.

Just out of curiosity, how much did I actually have left? How big is my tank?

You have diesel? well unless they changed it, the diesel tank is 40ltrs so you have minus left!!

MK6.5 diesel tank = 43l, you would have had 1.4l left or 16miles @ 52mpg ;)

Why? (I just got a tdci, last fiesta was petrol so dont really know much)

I'm not sure, this is my first diesel too! Dad told me if you run out of fuel in a diesel it's a lot harder to start and could cause damage (more so then a petrol version)

Sure someone else will be able to verify/explain better!

Old style Diesels could be a pain if you ran out of fuel as they had to be 'bled' of air in the system by actually undoing various connections at the engine/injector pump. This meant you would need a mechanic or towing to a garage, not a big issue just very inconvenient compared to a petrol fill and go. Some older designs would self bleed like Bosch equipped VW Golfs so very similar to running out of juice in a petrol engined car.

However the latest designs of Diesel engine operate at fanastic injection pressures (10s of '000 PSI)and the fuel is used to lubricate the moving parts. No fuel, no lubrication and damaged injection system. Also reading reports from people that have tried to DIY service their cars inc changing the fuel filter has meant a trip to the main dealers to bleed the system as its not possible DIY. I believe if you get very low on fuel the car will go into limp mode to preserve what fuel is left and to encourage you to find a petrol station.

For those that know are the Diesel and petrols tanks really the same size and Ford just say you have a smaller capacity for Diesels so you have a larger reserve of fuel left to avoid the above???
