Intermittent Fan Problem

Featured Replies

Hi

I was wondering if any one could help!!

I have a 1.6 TDCI Zetec climate (Reg May 2008)

My problem is an intermittent problem, November last Year my wife was driving back from Portsmouth and the fan came on while driving, she got back home, switched the car off and came and told me.

I went out and took the car for a run to listen to it, there was nothing. about 4 weeks later I was on my way to work (Transit plant Southampton) and the fan came om! I switched the car off it still ran on, my wife drove the car back home, the fan kept running till it drained the battery.

I called a local garage, Mat is a ford Trained mechanic, he took the car back to his workshop and found nothing wrong!

I took the car to the dealership as it is still under waranty, they under took diagnostic checks and found nothing, wrong!

Since then all has been fine until today, when it happend again! luckily I switched the car on and off and the fan stopped running on and all seems fine again!

Strange thing is it happens when the outside tempreture differs but mainly when it is cold?

Also I had no problem till November last year!

Finally could anyone advise me if it would be OK to disconnect the battery if this happens again after trying the switching on and off of the car!

This would allow me to save battery!

I would be grateful for any advice

hi, i would be tempted to say its possibly a relay that intermittently sticks shut. i use ford ids dealer software and this fault is unlikly to show up on diagnostic. too many times i hear dealers tell customers the computer says theres nothing wrong with your car like your immagining it...anyway next time it does it pull the cooling fan relays out one at a time. the one that stops the fan is the faulty one. look in your manual beforehand and identify the relays concerned to save time when your batterys being eaten, regards steve
