I'm new to this forum but i have browsed many DPF pages on this forum so I apologise if some of this repetitive.

I own a 2006 focus 2.0 tdci 68'000 miles. full Ford service history.

I am aware that the DPF needs changing at 75K service. I have rung round many inpendent garage and diesel specialist who wont touch it.

Mt local ford dealership who quoted £750 for genuine ford DPF and £450 to fit an aftermarket one.

I drive quite economically and rarely rev the car above 2000rpm, usually get around 50mpg and my journey to work is mainly motorway miles. Ford also told me that some filters go at 50k and some can last past 100k.

The diesel specialist and Ford mentioned the regenerating the filter by driving at 4000rpm in 3 or 4th on the motorway for 30 mins which will trigger the regeneration. The explained that the sort and black smoke would be trailing behind the car.

Today I drove down the motorway for 30mins in 4th gear (4000rpm) and nothing happened. So.... i turned around and drove back n 3rd at 4000rpm. Nothing happened, no smoke, it reasonably quiet. Could the filter be already clear?

I'm considering servicing the car at 75k and then leaving the filter until 85k.

Any advice please, sorry for the long winded post.

Forced regen only occurs when the filter is blocked. as long as the eolys fluid is topped up and used, and the car is driven "correctly" for the DPF to work, then it will be somewhat "clear". the DPF itself isnt something that is "cleaned" by the regeneration, but most of the crap inside it is heated up, converted to gas and thrown out the backend (hence the black smoke if its really bad). The filter will however still be full of some guff, the regen basically clears a path through the the DPF for the exhaust gasses so that the engine doesnt choke.

As for the changing of the filter, some can last up to 100k miles, but it can run into limp home mode if it suffocates itself, so replace as and when you can really, however at the end of the day, it *should* be replaced at 75,000 so wether its replaced then or 15k miles later, makes no odds really.

now are you sure your vehicle has a DPF?

from what i have read and maybe jee can confirm this, but i beleive the years 2005-2006 (maybe 07??) is a very good year for the DPF, as they were an optional extra, and the buyer decided to have it fitted or not.

i could be wrong, but i know jee, catch and artscot may know more.

as far as I know, the majority of 1.6's if not all were issued with the damned item, the 1.8's were avoided altogether, and the 2.0 I believe was very few - mainly optional.

thanks for the replies guys, its defo has dpf filter because it was topped up on 37.5k service (i checked receipts). Ford also informed me last time it was serviced.

Its just alot of money to fork out on top of a service.

anyways they say around 75k is the life of the dpf, as thats when the fluid needs topping up. but yeah its very expensive to get sorted. if your planning to keep the car for another say 50k it maybe worth investing in DPF removal and Remap. then you wouldnt have to worry about it again.

how much is removal and remap? any dvla problems regarding road tax? im planning on keeping the car until 200k (if it lasts)

im considering selling it and getting a 1.4 petrol polo which returns the same mileage. I've had enough with the service bills already. Plus any garage can work on a 1.4 polo

Removal and remap from the majority of companies offer the full service for about £500.00 on average.

As for the DVLA review my thread http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=18241 which has emails bouncing between me and the Department For Transport with there review on it. as far as DVLA are concerned it should be declared as part of your insurance process that there is a modification. Otherwise many people have done it and are seemingly fine!
