Reassure Me About The Noisy Mk7 Engine...

Featured Replies

I've been worrying about this since I got my car, the petrol engine sounds pretty noisy (sounds like a 3-cylinder to me) is this normal? I don't think there is anything wrong with the performance, it seems to go alright. I actually feel embarrassed when I have passengers, makes me sound as if I'm a boy racer with a tin can exhaust

:) Yeah, I remember that thread but the only real answer you got was from someone with a diesel engine, which doesn't really put our minds at ease

I just didn't expect it to be as noisy. All the reviews in the motoring press seem to state how refined it is, it seems a bit odd that Ford would go through the trouble to make it nice and comfortable and then put a 2-stroke lawnmower engine in it :D

I thought the engine sounded a bit noisy for a petrol on start up, thought ford had sold me a diesel instead.

Mine's the same although I cant remember it been that noisym when I first got it.

I have a problem with mine though when Ideling it feels a bit lumpy like it's missing the odd beat. Anyone else's doing this?

The few I've driven were all quite noisy. The exhaust has a bit of a rasp to it too, but I like that.

Mine does this, I'm mentioning it at the service, it does it at low revs in first and second too, which affects speed when crawling through traffic. I been told the technical term is "hunting" It goes for it's service in a couple of weeks, so I'll try let you know if they say anything.

My 1.6 Ti-VCT Fiesta petrol engine's a bit noisy too, especially in comparison with my previous car which was a (very quiet) owned from new 2002 Astra 1.6 16v petrol. I think it's just a "characteristic" of these engines & I'm not at all worried about mine.

Incidentally when I bought the Astra my Dad also purchased a (new) 2002 Focus 1.8LX which I believe has an engine from the same "family" as the Fiesta - though without the Fiesta 1.6's variable cam timing & other refinements made since; I recall that the Focus always seemed noisy in comparison to my Astra.

Actually, aside from the engine noise itself which I soon got used to & don't really notice now, I quite like the exhaust note on my Fiesta - especially on the (increasingly rare due to the price of fuel) occasions when I put my foot down! Just a pity those sporty twin exhaust pipes, which are fitted as standard - are hidden away behind the back bumper.
