Fiesta Starter not engaging

Can anyone help with this. My 1996 Fiesta 1.3LS has not been used for about 4 months. Went to start it and battery flat (no surprise). Charged battery, and starter whirrs but does not engage. Any ideas? Is the engagement gear stuck? Can it be easily freed if so?

I'm a newbie, and don't know where to start.

    best thing to do is remove the started and lubricate the shaft and engager cog and check that everything is free and easy to move.

    doesnt the fiesta starter motor have a solenoid which pushes the drive cog into place?
