Pas Problems

Featured Replies

hi ive got a 1997 mondeo verons 1.8, only had it a few days and there seems to be a problem.

1. is the pas meant to be heavy?? i mean it takes two hands to do a 3 point turn and it when the wheel rights itself it feels like its pulling harder?

2. heavy clutch as well and hard to push

if these are normal then okay, i know its an older car but it just seems strange

any help would be great

thanks

check the pas fluid level, it could be low,

as for the clutch, soz cant help u on that

Agree with checking the PAS - also when you turn the steering wheel do you hear a little whine? you should be able to as thats the power steering pump - if you dont hear a whine you might have a PAS pump problem - easy test.

Turn the car off, and into electrics so you can disable the steering lock, try turning your wheels...

...Now start the engine, and try turning the wheels - if there is a mass improvement - but its not great still, it could just be low PAS fluid or the pump may need replacing, if there is no improvement sounds like the PAS going to need a new pump as a start.

As for the clutch - define "Heavy" - you have to stamp on the pedal with two feet to move it? and it just feels like the clutch itself may be a little stiff? if thats the case it may be worthwhile checking clutch / gearbox fluid - check the service records, has it been changed recently? is the clutch itself good? i.e. if you have your handbrake on, how little bite do you need before the car is ready to pounce, or do you need a lot?
