Reversing Light

Featured Replies

My 2001 Fiesta reversing light will not come on. Have checked the bulb and switch and both are ok. I shorted our the switch and light works so does not appear to be the wiring. Anyone know what the problem might be. What activates the switch in the gearbox?

Any help greatly appreciated

Putting the car into reverse pushes the switch from inside the gearbox and makes the connection. Sounds like you just need a new switch. The last one I had to change was on an 1997 Escort Cabriolet, which was a pretty easy job.

BT thanks for your thoughts. I have checked the switch and it works. Its what is in the gearbox that makes contact with the switch that seems to be causing the problem. Do you know what that is --- is it activated by pressure or by a cam or gear in the gearbox. Really dont want to have to get a new gearbox. !Removed! can can't pass mot because of this light.

When you say you shorted out the switch, what do you mean? How would shorting out the switch be a test that ithe switch is working. It would obviously make the connection if that is what you mean.

replacing the switch is a much cheaper option, the reverse light is NOT part of a MOT it does not need it for an MOT at worst the tester could do a manual advisory.

Sorry if I misled you. When I say mot I am talking about the Irish NCT which is similiar to MOY but they insist that the reversing light works or you fail. I have taken out the switch and if I push back the ball the switch and light works, that is why I think there is something wrong inside the gearbox. Maybe I am pushing the ball back further than it normally goes but will check this again in next few days. Thanks for your help anyway.
