Guide To Fitting Additional Boot Light In Ford Focus Mk2 And Mk2.5

Featured Replies

Ok seems easier doing the seal then.

I've been searching for the light itself for ages but not had much luck finding a cheap one, cheapest I've found is one for £5 inc £2.50 delivery.

anyone able to find one cheaper? ford told me easiest way is a scrap yard but not sure where my local one is and by the time I mess around driving to one I might as well just buy the £7.50(inc P&P) one mentioned above.

Hi mate,

if you email breakers on ebay and ask them for a price on the part, you will get one alot cheaper, also keep in mind that the boot light fitting from any of the ford range hasent changed in design since 1994.

the boot light ive fitted to mine is from a 1997 fiesta,

i found that if you buy from a breaker, they dont know the going rate/value of the boot light fitting and will sell it to you for very little money,

try this seller and tell him i recommended him to you, i purchased a cup holder rubber base from him before and i told him i would recommend on the forum Click Here

I've ordered the cables and clips. emailed about 7 different users on ebay that are breaking down ford cars but only 1 has replied asking for £90 but i think he means i want the rear light unit even tho i sent him a picture of the interior boot light.

looks like £7.50 is my best option was hoping for a bit cheaper.

Question, does having a number of lights running off the same cable reduce the brightness of the lights?

for example each time you add an addition light does the set of lights get dimmer as the power is split over the lights?

If you had more than 20 of these lights running standard bulbs and all daisy chained then the 21st bulb would sink the brightness of the others mate,

so 2 or 5 or 6 is fine no problem,

and your using led clusters which consume less power than the regular gas filled bulbs so you could run 5 led clusters on the line before you would be using the same amount of power as 1 standard fitting. ;)

Ok thanks for answering that for me.

Ha, got a reply from one guy on eBay, asking for £15 for the light fitting.

Why link to a 2M cable when you have said use 4metres? I just bought it without reading how long as I bought it using my phone (didnt think i'd have to if you were linking directly to the item). Just recieved it today and noticed its the wrong length...

http://www.ebay.co.u...=item27b226260c

should link to this one instead! now going to have to reorder this. luckily I have something else I plan to do that I can use this 2M cable for.

Swearing removed. Swearing is not allowed on FOC - especially when directed at another member. Pleaee familiarise yourself with the rules of the forum.

The original listing shown by Lenny in the link states that it's for 2m - and also that if you want a longer length simply increase the quantity and you shall receive it as a single piece - so it's perfectly valid to post it in this context.

Same principals apply their mate, why would I buy 5 when I only need 4?

And depending on what way you run it, you may only need 3, i can’t be responsible for other peoples errors, the seller had not got a listing for 5m when i bought my cable from him, and their are many sellers of electrical cable on the market I simply put that seller in as a guide line. May I ask you Is it my fault that the light in the guide has been sold too??

I will edit the guide to link to the 5m cable since the seller is now listing 5metres of it No need for the attitude my friend.

My guide may not be perfect but i don’t work for Haynes i do this stuff for free.

lenny dont adjust your guide.... as 5 meters is too much and a waste of money!

your way is more cost efficiant, and you will notice many people are following this topic and every1 seems to have got it right as far as i know?

the guy evan admits 'I just bought it without reading how long as I bought it using my phone' so whos at fault lol

I've just installed mine last night and looks great. One slight thing is mine seems to leak light onto the panel above, does anyone else have this?

I've placed mine slightly closer to the side unlike yours which is more towards the back but I just tried to match the standard fitted light on the right side.

some pics of mine, slight mess where i put some tape to hold the light but will clean it off when i hoover the boot.

hey mike, yea same thing with mine. i positioned mine to mirror the origional light and i get a small line of light just above it but nothing id loose any sleep over lol

was just wondering if it was from me when i was messing around with the panels and such.

Nice touch i must say.

I'm going to have to stop reading these tips as i'm driving the missus nuts with all the ideas i'm getting (obviously not the ideas she wants me to have)

Quick question.. can i do the splicing and everything when the boot light is on? Or so I have to disconnect a fuse and battery etc?

you can do it with the light on mate, naughty425.gif

lol but bare in mind that when a door is open or the boot is open on the car for more than 60minutes the car automatically cuts the power to the lights to save the battery, so if you leave the boot open for long enough the power will be cut by the car itself, but it is safe to splice while its live since its only a 12volt feed, but if the power goes it on you, its nothing you done wrong, its just the boot has been open for the duration required for the car to shut off the power to the interior lights, and they will be activated again if you unlock the car via the fob or open a door again to reset the timer.

I've got one of these LED pads either side of my boot:

WoW!! Their bright mate,

Id have the neighbours screaming at me to close the boot lol

  • 2 months later...

Finally got round to this over the hols when I found a spare hour, and can safely say it's one of the most rewarding little mods I've done in a long time!

I used 48 SMD LED pads like Charlie, but in white. I ordered 3 of them (2 for boot and a spare) and after about 3 and a half weeks, two arrived. I've been refunded for the other, so think they were about £1.50 each. I used wire that I stripped from Cat5 electrical cable that my brother has in the shed, used this for all my additional interior lighting on my old car with no issues.

I didn't bother getting a second 501 bulb holder, instead I just pulled the wires off one of the spare bulb connectors/adaptors that come with the pads and scotch-locked straight onto this. So now I can still unplug the pad connectors if need be for a replacement.

I stuck the pads between the two rectangular holes on either side of the boot trim and can't get over the difference. I didn't take any photos as I went along as light was fading and the rain was on and off, but it'll be no probs to unplug the bulbs and refit the original for a few before and after pics and show exactly where I've mounted them as well.

Cracking mod, really satisfying, and all for a total cost of about £3 and 30-40mins labour.

Sounds great and lighter cable to carry around aswell.

Look forward to some before and after images when you get the time and weather improves mate,

Did you get a chance to fit the 12V socket in the boot yet too?

Did you get a chance to fit the 12V socket in the boot yet too?

I'll have to say no to that, as I hang my head in shame! I thought I might have been on to something with that black plug I have back there, as I'm sure it's part of the parking sensor set-up. So thought it may have been a reverse-switched live and thought it would be an easy work around to just turn the ignition to II and put it in reverse when I wanted to use it, but no joy!

Then I remembered reading something on a thread on here (perhaps for the Fiesta?) where a guy had found some sort of live taped up on the passenger side, so was gonna try investigate that when I had the trim off for the boot light. But I found a mass of taped up wires and plugs on that side (which of course I didn't take a pic of!) so had no idea what was what! Have you come across the same on yours by any chance or is this another difference in the looms?

I'd like to find a live somewhere back there, rather than tapping into the 12V socket at the front and running cable through the car to the back, but think that's just me being lazy and starting to think it may be my only option!

See below a pic of my new bootlights fitted. It was pissin down so I didn't bother standing out to swap bulbs round for a 'before' pic, but supposed to be dry this evening so should get it tonight. Kind of needed really to show the massive improvement. By the way, the reason for the intense light in the pic on the right hand side is reflection from an inverter I have strapped up there in the velcro, which is another reason I want to fit the rear 12V there, as I'd have ideal access to a DC power source as well!

Lenny, also note the package you sent me with the 12V bits and bobs lying there... that wire sticking out the evelope is my earth with ring terminal already attached on one end, and the socket plugged in on the other! Really need to sort this asap

Looks top class mate,

Nice clear spread of light through the whole boot area, no chance of fumbling around searching for small tools in the dark.

Invertor looks cool too and as you said mate the 12v socket in the boot for it would be ideal, maybe fit a rocker switch next to the 12v socket to switch off when not in use to save the invertor from draining the battery when parked.

I also really like your boot floor mat,

Is it rubber or plastic? And is it padded underneath or do you fit the standard boot trim, then sit that on top?

Reason im asking is;

Im removing my full size spare wheel and space kit,

When removed i found that the boot liner carpet for the standard boot is bigger than the carpet for the boot with full size spare kit.

So ive gotta purchase a new boot floor mat, and im examining the various options lol
