'spinny Thing' On Top Of Vans

Featured Replies

Well this question is probably going to be very simple (in more ways than one I am sure!).

So I was driving behing a Tranny Van this morning, and saw again the little "spinning" thing on the roof, it span faster as he went faster, and slowed down when he slowed down.

Now as I dont see this on each and every van, my assumption is that this is possibly a 'generator' or small recharging device. I have seen them spinning on stationary / engine off locked up motors, and have never really understood there definitive purpose...

So If anyone can enlighten me :)

I thought it was for ventilation

im not sure of their purpose, but i know you can buy them with a cctv camer in them disguised as a spinning thing ;)

Simply an air vent, spins faster the faster you go, but I love the idea of some sort of generator :D

edit - nice link Fernsie B)

Could also be the slot for the key to wind it up :D

Excellent find fernsie! lol that would be good!

well my random question has been answered, I kinda feel bored by it now that I know its only a hole for the air to come out of... now if they attached some sort of magnets and wiring, they could generate free electricity! how cool would that be? 'let the air out and by the way, I will power your laptop as well!'
