I have a ford focus 56 reg and took it down to ford today because my fuel gauge is waving at me. I took it to ford just over a month ago when it was in its warranty with this problem and they said nothing was wrong but if it carries on bring it back. But now they are saying that it is the sender unit and won't do it on the warranty. So can anyone help me. I need to know what type of job it is and how much a sender unit would cost as i can't afford to get it done at ford and won't because of the way i have been treated.

Have you got any documents from the first time when they said nothing was wrong , if you have maybe contact ford direct and make a complaint.

Other post's i have read indicate it could also be the display as well or the sender unit as some have replaced the sender unit and still had the same problem.

Agreed, the FSU could be the issue, but then again, you cant have damaged it yourself (unless you have driven over something and somehow managed to get it to pass through your fuel tank, damaging your FSU and then returning out - without leaving a mark?) or it could be that there is a fault with the gauge as pree said. I cant think of anything else it could be, however as you reported the fault whilst your warranty was still valid, then as long as you can prove this, and show correspondance (especially from Ford saying 'come back another day') then you have a case to get them to honour the warranty. Companies often try to get you to come back and then 'oh, what a shame sir, sorry but your warranty seems to have lapsed... that will be several thousand pound please!' as you notified them in the warranty validity period, and neither are items that you can cause the damage to by yourself by "mistreatment" then you have every ground to get this done FOC. you may in the initial outlay have to pay for the diagnostics to be completed, however if you get this completed as part of the warranty, you can claim that money back.

Start by writing to the dealer and providing them your evidence, and asking for a written response, advising that you will consider taking this up with Ford UK if you feel that you are not being treated fairly and that you so far have the impression that you are being blamed for damaging a mechanical item that you are unable to damage! if thats the case, they would need to prove you have done the damage. so for example, if you have removed the FSU by the gap under the seat, or driven your fuel tank over the top of a bicycle or two, where you could have damaged it - then you may be out of pocket, however I cant see you being held liable for this one!
