Replacing Track Rod End 52 Plate Facelift Focus

Featured Replies

I have a mk1 52 plate focus which i noticed had wheel movement from side to side.

upon inspection have found that this is due to worn track rod end.

I have ordered the track rod end for about 15 pounds, now just need to clarify that the way I intend to change it is correct.

1.jack up bad side, place on axel stand and Remove Wheel.

2.undo the retaining bolt at base of knuckle holding the TRE to the hub.

3. Remove the knuckle from hub with splitter.

4. Mark on the track rod end where the Tre comes to on the thread.

5. Hold the track rod with a pair of small stilsons and turn the TRE off with another pair.

6. Wind new TRE on to the exact point marked in stage 4.

7. Put knuckle back in hub and insert the new bolt holding it tight to the hub.

I havent done one before but think this should be the right way to replace......please advise me if this is correct and if there is anything I should be careful of.

Thanks

James

Hi mate, you are not far off but before you undo the knuckle undo the lock nut that locks the tre to the tracfk rod and also make sure the new one is the same length as the old one, you can just count the turns to unwind it and wind the new one on the same amount. Hope that helps Dave

Cheers dave....just out of interest looked under the car earlier and couldnt see what you meant about locking nut holds the track rod end to the track rod.

where is this located or am I being thick.

Oh think I got you butts up against track rod end on the track rod?

Yeah already thought that the new one might be alternate length....ill measure it from the elbow whilst tre is still in place and mark the track rod accordingly should this be the case.... I think ill mark the rod and count turns off just to be safe.
