Sensor In Air Filter Box

Hi there,

I have just changed the air filter on my 2007 petrol ford focus and noticed a cable going into the air filter box. Inside the box just in front of the sensor, there is a small green sponge that looks quite oily. Just wondering what sort of sensor is it? Is it a mass air flow sensor? A bit of googling around shows that MAFs sit inside the inlet pipes and not in the air filter boxes but I could be wrong?
