There is a bad leak from my power steering but I can't see where it is coming from other than to confirm that the fluid seems to be leaking onto the serpentine belt rather than down behind the pulley. On removing the pump I noticed that the high pressure pipe is held in place with an 18mm gland nut and a 10mm bolt through a mounting bracket. However, on removing the mounting bracket a noticed that the metal high pressure pipe can be rotated very easily without slackening the 18mm gland nut. The nut cannot be tightened any further. I was wondering if this is normal or is there any form of seal that may have gone?

Any advice appreciated.

the focus mk2 1.6 petrol is normally good at leaking power steering fluid, not sure if its caused by a blown seal or what though?

common fault, it's were the connector goes into the pump, you have to change the full pipe back to the rack and getting the connector back into the pump whilst the pump is on the car is one hell of a barsteward making sure you dont crossthread it.

Got it sorted. My local dealer supplied new power steering hoses and a separate nut that goes into the power steering pump BEFORE you push the new hose into it (much earier to get at with the pipe not conneted). £92 for the parts and got great technical advice from dealer - most significantly, removing the headlight improves access and visability!

my power steering makes a loud whirling noise when turning the steering wheel and driving, got my mot soon so worried it will fail, steering works fine

Just find an MOT tester who is deaf, many of them are blind 🤣
