Rev Counter Going Backwards

Hi all... Could anyone explain a reason why my rev counter has decided to start revving backwards?

I got in my car (2007 Mk3 LX) today and as I started it the rev counter needle spun all the way round. As I drove, the needle was moving backwards. As I stopped the needle came to rest at the bottom of the dial. Any help will be great. Thanks.

    I've heard of this happening before from some of my members on my diesel site, it was due to a faulty rev counter.

    I don't suppose you've had any battery/alternator problems recently?
