Engine warning light / Automatic gears stuck

I purchased a automatic Ford Galaxy last September from a Toyota garage, and at the time there was an issue that the engine warning light kept coming on......Toyota put it into a Ford garage to investigate, but they were unable to find anything wrong and light had now turned off.

Last week the light came back on...obviously concerned what this could be...and get a friend to have a look.............whilst he was unable to rectify he did notice that the car was not changing gears, and seemed to be stuck in 3rd gear all the time......something I had not noticed as only use the car on short journeys.....but had been concerned that it was only doing 20mpg.

I am getting it booked in at the local Ford Garage, but would be interested on people thoughts on the problem.
