Mk1 Problem With Stereo Control Stalk

Featured Replies

2001 focus 1.6 st

i bought it with a cheap after market stereo, swapped it today for the origional unit from ebay, despite it being the right one, the slot for the stalk control in the back of the stereo is too small! is there an adapter i can get to make this work, i like the car to be all origional. any help much appreciated

the ford stereo is like this one, the 2 main connectors work great but the stalk connector is too big for the space in the middle of the other 2 ??

Check the stalk wiring for a black plastic box.

Aftermarket radios use an adaptor for the controller that goes between the original connector and the radio.

Remove the box and the controller plug should fit the radio.

no mate i removed the cheap aftermarket stereo and replaced with the origional one, i removed all the adaptor wires and im back to the origional ford connectors, its that ford stalk connector that wont fit

Have you traced the stalk wire back into the dash to be certain there's no stalk interface tucked away?

The standard stalk wiring goes direct from the controller to the radio connector.

You may need to remove the steering column trim to make sure that no interface has been hidden away somewhere.

You may find it necessary to remove the radio trim off the dash too just to be certain, there's two screws at the top and two screws at the bottom of the radio slot and then the panel unclips.

Couple of wires to unplug and the trim is off.

Just to make it clear what you're looking for-

This is a diagram of the MK1 Focus radio loom plugs.

The middle one of the three (highlighted) is the shape of the plug you're seeking.

Does your radio have a round Volume button or 2 Push buttons for the Volume?

The model with Push buttons for the volume is an older radio (Escort, Mondeo MK1) which does not have the stalk control option.

The model with a round Volume button was Original available for the focus MK1 and does have the stalk control options.

Next to the different Volume buttons the middle connector at the back of the radio is also different. If the connector of the car is too big I suspect you have the wrong radio.

I'm taking it that the radio is as per the picture in the first post.

Having a second considerstion I'm beginning to think that ww2nut may be looking at the socket for plugging the CD changer into rather than the port where the controller plug should go.

The three standard connections for the radio can be clipped together to correctly fit the 5000/6000 radios but need to be seperated to fit a 6006 and most likely the same for plugging into a loom adaptor for aftermarket radios.

If the three original plugs are recombined (as per my posted diagram above) then that should solve the ptoblem.

I have a picture somewhere of the back of a 6000 radio for reference.

As promised-

This is what the plug looks like-

Hope this solves the mystery.

Yes i have the older button volume control not the knob type as above, this being the older model it has a middle space for stalk control plug, but its too small, i guess that means i can use the control stalk ??

The old radio with Volume Push buttons does not have stalk control support. The middle connector of this type of radio is used for other functions like Phone mute, AVC etcetera.

Ah, mystery solved.

I was going by the picture of the radio for type.

In that case I recommend a updated radio-

That's the 6006 radio with six disc changer inside.

Used to have on in my MK1 Focus and loved it.
