Focus 2003 1.8 Tdci Starting Trouble

Featured Replies

Hi first post and just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences?i have a 2003 focus 1.8 tdci 115 bhp.lately it has been harder to start,I try to warm the glow plugs up a few times( by turning key and waiting for light to go out) but sometimes especially when its cold in the mornings it seems to take 4 attempts to start?battery seems strong as it's chugging fine whilst trying to start(sorry not a great term chugging!),allegedly it's had new glow plugs but not 100% ,I have had injectors replaced as I bought car as a non runner but they were not programmed until today when I also had it plugged into a diagnostic machine which reported that the injectors were spot on,don't know what else to put on here just hoping that someone may help as it's fine once it's running but seems that when left for 10 hours or just overnight it don't want to start! Thanks In advance.

I also have 1 more issue that the speedo/clocks needles point to 12 o'clock (directly up)when the key is not in the ignition (random) on the left and right needles?(sorry can't remember what they are for?)i have changed the clocks twice and the problem still exists.

OK so the issue with starting, I wouldnt rule out the battery. Every time you turn the key your starting to prime the car and it drains some of the battery, do that 4 times and your running a lot of juice out of the battery. If you have a bad cell in the battery this could be an issue. Check that the battery is relatively new and ensure that it is silver calcium technology and not lead acid!

With regards the needle, it sounds odd... all power should be cut to the car when the battery is out, as such any readings should not be visible as well you know... When you run the car, does the needle move? if it does thats a good thing, if not, then I would normally say the clocks are done, but as you have replaced it, that would suggest that the issue may be wiring and a short circuit, or a bad connection at the instrument cluster?
