Ecu... Help Needed!

Featured Replies

Afternoon Lads and Ladies!

I'm new here, as you can see from the number of posts, so go easy if I happen to break any of the forum rules, I'm not one for reading 'instruction manuals' of sorts so just going to wing it..

Anyway, on to my problem..

I have a 2007 Fiesta ZS (TDCI) which I've only just recently bought - was all well and good, smooth running + the like until my battery decided to conk out on me when out for a crafty !Removed! (parents don't know I smoke!)

After which I tried to run the car, would crank but would not start - as I had a mate who only lives 5 minutes away I decided to call him to get him to come and Boost the car (have done this on several other cars no problem at all)

Once he gets to me, we proceed (and fail) to jump the car, but this time the car won't crank whatsoever, I end up calling the AA guy out who couldn't fix the car (even after spending an 1hr 30 on it - fair play to him!) Car then gets towed to Thame Ford.

Fords have since tested my car and have told me boosting it (according to manual instructions) has spiked the main ECU of the car, resulting in a rather hefty £1300 fitted and programmed quote from the service manager.

I wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem before + if so what their experience was of such issues. I'd requested ford take the ECU off (6S51-12A650-VC) so that I can send it off for testing/repairs so at the minute I'm praying this works!

Apologies for the general text heaviness of the thread but thought you should all know my 'story' ha! Comments/Advice welcome!

welcome dave, right to start did you jump start or use a portable booster? i have heard boosting the battery while its connected can fry an ecu but it should be protected by a fuse. but jump starting only gives the battery in parallel 12v so it shouldn't cause a problem. i know its not an easy repair or cheap one for that matter, but some services can repair your ecu and some have good reviews but i don't think i could trust them myself id rather let ford do it, if they mess it up they pay for it not me, so I'm not sure where those repair companies stand warranty wise or if it acc works again after the "repair". hope it helps and good luck

Cheers for the insight lad,

I boosted it off another car which I thought would solve the problem - clearly not...

The repairs 225 inc vat, and if it's repairable I get a 12mo warranty.. Should it not work I've been told they'll sort me a refund as sometimes repairs don't work!

Ideally I'd have got a new one from ford but bit low on finds and don't want to spend 1500 on it!

There's also the small fact of a remap that's on the current ecu - just want to save that if I can as it'd set me back another 3-400!

A friend of mine did the same...cranked the car over while the battery charger was still connected.. The car went awol... Loads of faults came up even the power steering stopped working.. Changed the crank position sensor ( which was one of the many faults it showed) and it all cleared... Work that one out:)

Ahaha I won't even bother trying, I'm useless with technicalities on cars.. Interestingly ford couldn't get a response from the car when plugged in..

Spoke to a few people and they've said could be the ecu, maybe the PATS system but I've no idea - just feel like the dealership is trying to mug me off a bit!

Bumping.. Spoke to the ECU repair place (ecu technologies) they've told me the ECU seems to be damaged, though they can't find anything wrong with it?

They then told me the only error codes they've been able to find is a last P.A.T.S issue but can't tell me exactly when this popped up.

Funny thing is I asked ford arm whether it could be the pats and they pretty much gave me a straight no..

Going round in circles a bit here, can anyone offer any advice as to what they think it's most likely to be? Ta!
