Hi I Am New Hear But I Have A Few Problems With My X Reg 00 Ford Focus 1.6 Lx

Featured Replies

One is I have noticed is my break fluid has slowly evaporated as there are no leaks I was wondering what type of fluid I should get is it dot 4 or 5.1?

Two my car on a cold start never starts first time I have to use the accelerator to get it to start? Where when I had my puma it turned over first time with in seconds of turning the key I have changed the spark plugs with Bosch super 4 plugs and I have noticed improvements in performance and fuel consumption but not this first time start

Also my rear window wiper gets 2/3's of the way round stops then a few.seconds later finishes the cycle but then on the way back gets stuck in the same place then returns to the start I have taken the arm off and lubricated it but it hasn't made a difference and ensured it was secure not loose

Also my front passenger window but doesn't work but works from the drivers side any ideas

Would really appreciate any help you can off in helping me identify these fault causes It is my first focus and feel it's basically a good car and despite it's 13 years will last me another good 2 or 3 years.

- i would go with some dot 4, i am sure dot 5.1 is the same but is a higher spec fluid for racing etc ... shouble be able to find out on google easy enough , they fluid may evaporate if the car is needing the brakes done , dose the pedal fell like there is pressure ?

- unsure as to the problem with the staring , have you gave the car a service ? a good oil chance makes the engine turn over easier ( dose the car idle ok after it has been started ? )

- you may need a new wiper motor as it may be on its way out , easiest way to solve the problem is to remove the wiper motor completely , and pup a grommet over the hole that is left behind , grommets can be purchased from halfords for a couple of pound

- if the driver side controls the passenger window then the circuit is still linked to the passenger side button ( if the passenger side was not connect the driver switch would not operate the window motor) , i would take the button out give it a good clean with electrical contact cleaner and see how you get on , could be something simple like damp in the connectors as the car is older

hope some of this information helps you out , i am sure others will help out and correct me if im wrong :)

Concerning the wiper fault, Check the wiring in the loom that passes between the roof and boot.

The insulation on the wires gets stiff and brittle over time and can cause the wires to snap.

Once water gets into the wires (and it will) you will get shorts and other boot related problems.

I had this symptom and after a week or so had problems with the boot release first opening itself while the car was running and later not functioning by switch and key, the demister stopped working and the third brake light packed up.

In the end I had to cut out the bad wires, splice in new ones and replace the wiper motor and boot lock unit.

dot 4 fluid it doesnt evaporate so its going somewhere either a leak from a brake or the clutch slave cylinder is leaking inside the gearbox youde see traces on the joint under the car where the gearbox is mated the window is likely a switch needing replaced the plugs shouldnt be super 4 plugs for that car but ngk iridium plugs gapped at 1.0mm and hard starting can be a battery cell faulty a free battery check will tell you if thats okay the idle control valve can also be faulty causing starting issues

thanks folks for the help the spark plugs i got were recommended at halfords so I Bought them plus if you type my reg number into the halfords website they are the ones to come up first. it was a toss up between the Bosch super 4 with 4 electrodes or the bosch plugs with one electrode or champion ones again with one electrode one was 25 quid the other was 18 quid and the champion ones were 17 quid

As for the brake fluid there is no leak any where that i can see all i can assume is that the brakes were done and then not topped up properly allowing for fluid to enter the system but there is as ample pressure in the breaks i just notice it wasn't topped up to the maximum line when i was doing an engine inspection when i got the car in october the level of fluid has not moved since but i would just like to top it up.

Never listen to halfords type youre reg in they will supply you with a lead battery though the focus cant use them the reason you dont use those plugs is the electrodes are gapped wrong and they will kill the coil pack incorrectly gapped plugs will also kill the coil pack and cause running issues and idle problems single electrode ngk are what ford use and recommend also check the manual some fords you dont top the fluid to max it should sit between min and max so that theres room for the fluid to expand as it warms up

Replace fuel filter aswell if u havin done so as the lads say break fluid only drops if pads wear or a leak it should be changed every two years as it absorbs moisture an as for dot 4 an 5 as far as I aware one just has higher boiling point
