SCHEDULE 2
REQUIREMENTS FOR REGISTRATION PLATES
PART 1
VEHICLES REGISTERED AND NEW REGISTRATION PLATES FITTED ON OR AFTER 1ST SEPTEMBER 2001 (MANDATORY SPECIFICATION)

1.
The plate must be made of retroreflecting material which, as regards
its construction, colour and other qualities, complies with the
requirements of —

(a) the British Standard specification for
retroreflecting number plates published on 15 January 1998 under number
BS AU 145d(1), or

(b) any other relevant standard or
specification recognised for use in an EEA State and which, when in use,
offers a performance equivalent to that offered by a plate complying
with the British Standard specification,

and which, in either
case, is marked with the number (or such other information as is
necessary to permit identification) of that standard or specification.

Basically as I take it from my oppo who's a 'Black Rat' only cars registered before 1070 are permitted painted or vinyl plates (E type Jags etc.) and only if that is how they were originally plated.

After 1970 the plates must be flat and easily readable from front/rear.

Some Alfa's are seen with plates mounted to one side of centre but that is accepted due to grille and bumper design.

Upshot- Vinyl = Illegal.

All plates must be BSAU 145D compliant in regards to size, font, colour, reflectivity, letter spacing, logos and plate producer's name or postcode.

Going by the amount of cars I see with illegal plates day after day in the same areas, not much chance :D

^ :D

The offence only carries a £50 fine for a number plate that doesn't meet the requirements but being vinyl I would imagine you'd find your self in alot more trouble than £50

The penalty is a non-endorsable fine of £60 but if it is considered that the plate has been altered/positioned/made in such a manner that it may be in order to commit a further offence (bilking, avoiding speeding penalties etc.) then the fine could be up to £1000, endorsements may be applied and an order to complete a new MOT may be given.

Indeed it can.

DVLA will withdraw the plate, you lose any right to use it and no refunds.

Seen a few 4x4 owners stick a duplicate vinyl sticker up high. Apparently the front bumpers on a Frontera aren't overly rugged. So the vinyl sticker was stuck up top as a "better than nothing" measure when driving home from a green laning session.

Personally, I would have just avoided the V***hall and used something more appropriate...like a Reliant Robin.

Cheers Stoney and mix, quite like to keep my plates haha, will look for some legal ones now, but can you change the font? Nothing outrageous just not standard

Short answer - No.

You can have 3D lettering but the font must be correct.

Best to just get some legal ones mate.

I've got some legal 3d Font ones, and my guy at the garage didn't even know they were legal, until I showed him the legislation. They are not raised or vinyl, just give the 3D effect. Got mine from demonplates.

I have the same ones a Ben. They look plenty nice and they are 100% legal. Really good quality too. Not worth the hassle going illegal, as a young bloke in a modified car you are just giving the police an open invitation to pull you and slap you with a fine.

cheers :) next purchase sorted :)

You can have borders and what not but I think they look best with no borders. The demonpates name/postcode they have to have to be legal is extremely small and is barely visible as its right on the edge. They are about 30 quid a set, you can also get 3d with raised lettering if you want something a bit more fancy but they are about 45 quid a set
