Mk 2.5 Rear Lights On A Mk2

Featured Replies

Other than buying the correct rear mk2.5 lamps and bolting them to a mk2, is there anything else involved? I want to continue using standard bulbs, so I would prefer not to buy a LED setup (if indeed Ford offer a LED variety of rear lamps).

I've had a look on Ford Parts UK and they offer these:

http://www.fordpartsuk.com/shop/ford_focus_mk3_standard_rear_lamp_lh_level_1_for_35_door__f_1520769_c_553.htm

However, they also offer these:

http://www.fordpartsuk.com/shop/ford_focus_rear_lamp_rh_saloon_2007_f_1528770_c_553.htm

In the latter link, it makes reference to standard bulbs NOT LED. The problem is they offer both left and right for the first link, but only seem to offer one side of the car for the second unless I'm missing something.

I know there are people on here who have done this mod already, so just looking for some basic pointers.

Thanks.

Your first link contains the 3/5 doors tail lights and your second link contains the Saloon (Wagon) tail lights.

On a MK2 Saloon (wagon) version the MK2.5 tail lights are plug and play.

On a MK2 3/5 doors version the MK2.5 tail lights will with a few modifications. The fitment of the lights is identical but the wiring and bulb holders are different. The MK2 tail lights have seperate bulb holders which connect directly to the wiring loom of the car. The MK2.5 tail lights have the bulb holders integrated into a small wiring loom which connects to the wiring loom of the car. The connectors of the MK2 and MK2.5 wiring looms are different. To connect the small MK2.5 wiring looms to a MK2 you have to cut/modifie the wiring and connect it to the correct wires of the wiring loom in the car.

I retrofitted the MK2.5 tail lights to my MK2 and made some adapter wiring looms (using connectors of scrap cars) which connect between the wiring loom of the car and the small wiring loom of the MK2.5 tail light. This way I can change back the original MK2 tail lights if nescessary without any problems.

Ok no problem. I'm not interested in doing this if it's not plug and play so I think I'll leave it or see what aftermarket items are available (although normally they are a bit naff). Thanks.

I doubt the second link must just have the wrong pic or title. As Wilco says above, they're listed for the saloon, but the saloon lights are completely different as they're on the corners of the tailgate rather than along the edge of the rear windscreen. So it's either the wrong pic, or again as Wilco says, they're for the estate (wagon) and not the saloon and the title is wrong.

I have done this mod myself and although there is a bit of cutting and re-wiring, it's really not that difficult. As mentioned above, the looms are different on the facelift, so you just need to work out which wires do what and join them accordingly.

There's a basic guide on here and one from another forum which I followed for mine, and I took loads more pics and notes as I went along with the intention of doing a guide for here, so I'm sure between myself and Wilco we'd be able to help you through it no worries. I actually added in a wee red LED strip to the top of the light as well for the dual-lit LED look. Great upgrade from the pre-facelift lights I reckon!

Only thing is, the red halogen bulb at the bottom now looks a bit orange-y in comparison to the deep red of the LED strip at the top, but I'm finding it a nightmare to source an LED version of the stop/tail bulb at the bottom to balance it out!

These would be the type of aftermarket ones you'd need for a straight swap, normally come in chrome, smoked or black I think...

I've actually bought some more LED bulbs (once the LED craze starts, it won't stop) which include Cree tail light / brake light bulbs, so I might as well stick with the standard lights due to differing bulbs on mk2/mk2.5.

I've seen those types of lights on Ebay but they don't appeal to me. Perhaps I'm getting older, but I like OEM parts more now than aftermarket.

Thanks for your help anyway :)

Actually scrub that. Alltronix have just informed me they don't have stock of the Cree 380 brake/sidelight and aren't getting it back in!

Might still be tempted to do this after all.
