A Few Problems With My New Mk1

Featured Replies

Hi all

I recently purchased a mk1 51 plate 1.6 focus zetec petrol. Car is generally tidy and just has a few things that need my attention and just looking for some advice.

First thing I'm doing to the car is full service Inc timing belt and water pump. I'm doing this partly because it didn't come with a service book (and it's done 106k miles) and party because it feels a bit rough and juddery whist driving (just needs a bit of tlc)

The main problem I have with the car at the moment though is a little overheating problem. After driving at 75-80 for about 30 secs the temp needle goes from 12 o'clock position almost to the red. I immediately slowed down and the needle went straight back to normal. Have tried it a couple of times since and only happens at those speeds and goes back to normal after slowing down (between 60-70 is ok) I have drove around at 60-70 for half hour to from work since and no problems.

I'm thinking possibly thermostat problem or a radiator blockage. I do think the car heats up a bit quickly compared to my mondeo before

Any input welcome :D

Hey Rusty, welcome aboard

Can you see if anything looks new or evidence of recent tampering or leakage...

What colour is the coolant?

Dose the car use coolant? The way to check is to check it each morning before you start it.

Is there any evidence of emulsion on the dipstick or filler cap?

Dose the heater always work once the car is warmed up?

I wonder if the correct spark plugs have been fitted?

Thanks

Engine bay was cleaned before I bought it but when I inspected the car nothing looked new except for rear drums.

The coolant is pink and looks clean and hasn't gone down at all and the oil is fine aswell.

Were you thinking head gasket? :o
