Speedo Dial Lights

Featured Replies

As above half of my speedo does'nt light up so is this a hard fix? Also would it be worth upgrading the bulbs to l.e.d's? If so is it a simple swap?

Which lights aren't working mate? The two little LCD panel are lit up by a 286 bulb behind each panel, the same type of bulb that lights the little ring around the lighter/12V in the centre console. There are 4 more of these up the middle of the cluster that light the warning lights.

There are then 4 x 504 bulbs behind the rev counter and speedo dials...they're a 3W version of your standard 501 wedge bulb used in sidelights etc.

See pic below of rear of cluster I grabbed from an online guide and edited...ignore the yellow rings, they're screws for removing the back off, only needed if you're planning on changing the colour of the LCD panel filter. Red rings are for the 504 bulbs, blue rings are for the 286 bulbs.

It's an idea to change the lot of them at once to save having to do it again in the near future if one or more of the remaining bulbs fail. £2-3 from your local motor factors for the lot (4 x 504 plus 6 x 286).

Below is the FordWiki link for the guide on how to remove the cluster. About a dozen screws in total from memory in around the steering wheel cowl and dash trim, and a few clips that need a decent tug. Just keep screws safe, nothing worse than putting everything back together to find out your missing something!

On the question of LEDs, it is just as straightforward but you'll need to source them. I actually have a bad of LED 286 bulbs somewhere but, could be anywhere! There's also the possibility they could turn out far too bright. The other option for changing colour is changing the dial faces. I have done this to white Lockwoods, but kept the green backlight as I didn't want the hassle of changing the LCD panel colour or all the rest of the dash/console switches and buttons, so preferred to keep it green throughout.

could be as simple as a bulb to be honest... might be worth removing it and checking if its a standard bulb, as I cant remember if it is or if its an SMD LED...

It's definitely a bulb, it's one of the four 504 bulbs as circled in red in the first pic I posted, the one behind the unlit area obviously.

The dash needs to come apart as per the wiki guide to get the cluster out to replace it. Although this is really straightforward (about 14 screws and a few clips), you still wouldn't want to be having to do it all over again in the near future to change other bulbs, so for the cost of a full set of bulbs (4 x 504 and 6 x 286) you might as well change the lot.

While you have the speedo cluster out, it is an option then to fit the white Lockwood dials like I have a done. You just take the perspex face off the cluster, remove the gauge needles, peel off the standard black face and stick on the new white one. Refitting of the needles requires a bit of care and attention, but it's all there in the wiki guide. I got my first set for under £20, can only see them for £30 now...still a worthwhile mod in my eyes...

Also, replace the bulbs with LED equivalents to get the best light output, you could even change the colour of the dials with a coloured bulb in there!

Could do, but, as mentioned before, be careful with fitting LEDs and make sure to get the right ones as too bright and they have been known to cause unbearable glare. Also bear in mind that the illumination we see is coming through a green filter on the speedo face, so this will offset the colour of whatever LED you put in there, i.e. fit blue bulbs and it'll shine through as a turquoise kind of colour.

From both my experiences of doing this, my favourite set-up is to keep it simple and change all bulbs with standard replacements and fit white Lockwood dials with green backlight. That way it keeps it consistent throughout the car. For me, if I were going to change to blue backlit dials I'd be wanting to do the LCD filters, and all the other interior buttons and switches rather than have some blue and some green, and I couldn't be arsd with all that!

You're options are pretty wide to be honest, just depends how much time/effort/green you wanna put into it. If you want to keep it standard, the bulb for 30p and about 30-40mins of your time.
