Petrol Cap.

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My focus I presume has been missing a petrol cap since I had it and wondering that there should be one on there yeah?? Can anyone please point me in the right direction on a cheap new one please?? Looked on eBay but loads on there lol.

Thanks

If your car has easyfuel then there isn't a cap fitted although you can get a locking cap for easyfuel cars but they're not cheap.

If your car is not easyfuel then pop into your local dealers parts department.

What u mean easy fuel??

Easyfuel is the system Ford use whereby a fuel cap is not used.

The inside of the filler neck has flaps that only open with a fuel pump nozzle or a back-up funnel Ford supply with Easyfuel cars.

It's designed to speed up filling and stop thieves syphoning fuel out of the tank.

Thanks just Googled it and looks like mine has it. Was worried bout rain water etc going around it or into it but must be designed not to.

The system is designed so that the filler pipe locks with the central locking system thus stopping syphoning etc.

You can get a locking cap for added security but only available from the US as far as I can tell.

Stoney says "You can get a locking cap for added security but only available from the US as far as I can tell." this was posted a few months back so - just wondered - I have a mk III Focus 12 plate and I want to get a locking cap, yes I have easy fuel system  but I came out of my house a few days ago, somebody had opened the petrol flap :o

Went down to Halfords, New Malden yesterday thinking I would ask the staff to FIT me a locking cap, as they are great on fitting car batteries etc but they do not stock any locking caps there at all

Which one would fit ?

how much will a correctly fitting fuel cap cost, and how much is the fuel worth in the tank at any one time, i wouldnt bother to be honest.

according to Amazon they cost £10 but what I'm worried about is will it fit mine? I might just order it and "hope" it fits when it arrives (unless anyone can say which one will fit)

it's just about peace of mind - this wouldn't be an issue if you had a garage that you parked the motor in overnight, I haven't got that so any Tom !Removed! or Harry can saunter up to my car and open the petrol flap if they want to. :( if I had a locking cap on there I'd just feel better about it, psychological ^_^

That locking cap in the picture would not fit the easy fuel system. The ones that do are quiet small at least half the size of the one in the picture

It doesn't matter if someone opened the filler flap...anyone can. The point of the system is that you can't get past the metal flaps inside unless you use the correct sized nozzle, which is either the petrol pump or the 'emergency' nozzle in your boot. And if it's locked (which I hope it is over night!) the flaps won't open at all...

that would be great but it does not happen on later models, apparently a couple of years back design decision made ...... the central locking no longer "locks" the flap

I'm pretty sure it does, lock the car, open the plastic flap and try sticking your emergency filler in, I doubt it'll go in, the metal flap should still be locked solid.

The plastic flap is no longer used with the central locking because it's unnecessary with the 'inner' system as I understand it.

The flap does open when locked, the easy fuel is also not linkef to the central locking. ! Have any of you tried syphoning through easy fuel? Lol

The metal one inside?

In that case I stand corrected, must've misread.

the exterior petrol flap doesn't lock. and if you park your car in the street or in public  anybody can come along and open the flap.

the fact that they cannot actually syphon fuel out after that may not be known to them and the fact that they can't PUT stuff into your petrol opening, could also not be obvious to them, so they will TRY

the scene where you come out in the morning and find the petrol flap open is annoying if not alarming, but if the person opening it sees a locked petrol cap instead of an open pipe - MAYBE that will do something to put them off trying or buggering about with someone else's car  SO ... has anybody bought a locking cap for a Focus III? where do you get it? :D

Yep, im no syphoning expert.but its bad enough getting a pipe down a non easy fuel focus.

Im not saying its impossible but rather than struggle for ages to get past easyfuel and filler neck , wuold be fuel thief will go for known easier cars to target

Every Ford dealer can order the lockable filler cap for the easy fuel system which is available as an accessory in the USA. The part number of this lockable filler cap is 8U5Z-9C268-B. However this is a specific USA part which is not sold in Europe. A ford dealer may charge additional costs for ordering such parts.

The lockable filler cap can often also be found on Ebay for about 20 to 25 Dollars. Directly buying it in the USA may be cheaper than ordering it from a local Ford dealer.

It is impossible to syphon from an easyfuel car.

You can put liquid in using the emergency funnel but nothing will come out.

I have done vehicle stops with HMRC dipping tanks for agricultural diesel and they can't even get a pipe the size of a straw down the filler even using the correct funnel.

At last , someone has tried and not just me. Lol

No I know that, I thought the inside flap (metal one) locked but it appears it doesn't.

Tbh if I saw someone trying to put something in mine I'd probably just film it for a laugh... They won't get anywhere with it. If they've got any sense they'll just carry a screwdriver and pierce the tank... Also anything they try to put in (are you making enemies where you live? ) will just end up on the floor anyway. Everytime I pull the diesel pump out I try to let the last dribble go in the tank rather than the paintwork but it always ends up higher than the easyfuel cut off and dribbles on the floor lol.
