Help Needed! My Focus Is Dying!

Featured Replies

Hi All

New to this but really need some help.

Car Details:

Ford Focus Zetec TDCi 1.8, Registration 19/06/2009 - 65k mileage.

The other day, I started my Focus up and heard a 'not normal' revving noise whilst driving it. No warning lights inititally, but then the oil Light came on, so I topped the oil up on the car, and the water to make sure. The 'not normal' revving noise went away.

Whilst driving on the M61 the cos lost power, but still revved up to 1000rpm but nothing more before eventually cutting out on the hard shoulder. AA recovered the car and towed me to a services where the guy checked and noticed a connector wire had melted and was smoking when trying to start the car. The AA guy checked the computer and there was very low fuel pressure. Tapping the fuel tank didn't start the car either so he suspected faulty fuel pump.

Getting it to a garage and after fiddling, could only get the engine started when the dipstick was pulled out. The engine fumes were coming out of that not the exhaust. The garage say that they believe there is a hole in one of the piston heads, and that the car needs a new engine - the cheapest of which he could find was a reconditioned engine for £1,200 (not sure if this is cheap or not)

I don't know alot about cars (as you can clearly tell) but does this sounds right? or could it be something else?

After the cost of the engine, plus labour i am looking close to £2k for repairs and want to be certain first.

Please help

Thanks

Andrew

Do you know if the garage has carried out a compression test?

No, but a mate also suggested I ask them that - so i will definitely make sure that I do.

It would give a good indication of which cylinder (or cylinders :O ) is affected.

Okay thanks - does £1.2k sound about right for a reconditioned Focus engine?

I'm not too clued up on the price of engines but that doesn't sound too bad for reconditioned, but I would check just how reconditioned it'll be.

Yeah okay

If it was a hole in the piston the car would be very difficult to start as diesels start on compression hole in piston no compression and if it did start would be as lumpy as hell on three cylinders it could possible be a head gasket you say loss of water and oil so I,d say it's feasible the head gasket has gone or a prob with the head rather than the piston .as for the burnt out wire was that at the top of the motor going to a sensor on the head that would be the fuel temp sensor read on hear before of that burning out .not sure if your fuel pressure would be down to going into limp mode that's just a pure guess .as for the price of the recon I,d say about right for a diesel but you should be able to pick up a low mileage motor from a breaker for a lot less I payed 700 for a 2.0 with 40000 on it from a ford dismantled in rugely so if worse case it does need a new engine there are cheaper options .

Cheers thank you, ill ask the question about the compression

Are there any other questions that you think It would be work asking?

Did he look for water in the oil. I would go with a head gasket aswell
