tdci clatter on start up.

Featured Replies

hello i have recently bought a focus tdci 115bhp 03 for the other half.

when it starts up even when warm it sounds a bit clattery and a touch loud.

when its running its sweet and drives good

i am used to my passat 1.9tdi and dont hear such noises.

any ideas folks? is that the way they are?

the mondys are the same i think its just the tdci set up.

that sounds bad. hope mine is not ready to go.

the turbo is ok at the moment and like i said drives good. i think mayber that is the way they are as the the last post states.

I just bought a focus 1.8 tcdi 53 plate with the same issue, took it back to the dealer and they replaced the starter motor (after doing a couple other irrelevant cheap repairs they agreed it was the starter which I'd read about on the ffoc). If you don't fix it quickly enough it can knacker your dmf (as it is trying to compensate for the low rpm) which is a very expensive repair. Does it turn over quickly? Mine was slowish, fine starting from cold but made a hell of a clatter when hot. I got mine back with the new starter and it turned over twice as fast- no more clattering when the engine was hot. Hope this helps. ;)

The tdci mondeos have this exact problem wich ford are aware of. Not herd of such problems on the focus though.

The solution on the mondeos is to fit a new crank (a think) pulley and tensioner. Also a modified EGR Valve can cause excessive knocking and black smoke from the exhaust.

As I say these are for the mondeos but could also apply to your focus

with me, its noisy wen cold, but quietens down when warmed up, so i think that just normal

are the valves hydralic on these diesels?

hello mine is inconsistant most of the time it apears to fire up ok and sometimes it makes a bit of a clatter.

when you turn the key it starts with plenty of life no lasy slow starting.

every now and then it needs to turns of the key to start it which i find a bit odd.

Mines the same as this mate, I'm no expert, but I expect some sort of clattering on a diesel. as I know their not as quiet as petrol engines.
