Is This Normal?

Featured Replies

Hi I am new to the forum & hoping someone can help me. I purchased a new 14 plate fiesta style replacing my 10 year old KA. It seems great to drive but one thing driving me a bit crazy is it seems to be making a constant humming noise (which is more noticeable when stationary/in traffic). It seem to be coming from the back of the vehicle & can be heard inside & outside the car.

When I spoke to the dealer they advised it was the air con & even when not switched on, it's still running in the background in order to instantly supply cold air when needed. They advised this was run via or close to the exhaust which does seem to be where the noise is coming from & that it's normal.

The car has only done 100 miles or so & I am a bit concerned - should I insist on the dealer taking a look or is this normal & I need to just turn the radio up louder!

Thanks in advance

Sounds like the fuel pump, quiet normal to here it running.

As willy said........& MissG id change dealers if I was you, they sound like they're making it up!!

An air-con unit would not be located anywhere near a exhaust, heat-soak would cause all manner of problems.

Thanks guys so we think its just the fuel pump running as it should? To be fair the guy I spoke to was in sales (not repairs!) so obviously did not know what he was talking about! He did say he would check with but I wanted to get an opinion on here as I clearly don't know anything either so didn't want them to fob me off by saying it was nothing if it was something!

My car ( a 63 reg Fiesta zetec) was exactly the same. A loud humming noise which sounded to me like it was coming from the back of the car. I took it back to the dealer and someone came out for a wee run with me and he said he thought it sounded like the fuel pump. They booked it in and had a proper look and confirned that that was what it was. They prdered the part and my car was in 2 weeks later. Only took a morning and I had it back again. Certainly seems a lot quieter now. Maybe it's a wee problem they have ... who knows. Was all done under warranty as well, so won't cost you anything if it's the same problem I had. Seems strange on cars so new.

Thank you so much JackieR - that makes me feel a lot better! As I said it seems fine to drive, its just more annoying than anything! I think I will take it back into ford & ask that they do check the fuel pump just in case. I think I am maybe noticing it more as the engine is so quiet compared to the 10 year old KA!!

I don't know how accessible these are but I wonder how easy it would be to add some packing between the pump and panel?
