Its probably the sensor for the air conditioning.

Yep, although odd they fitted them to all models regardless of spec.

Light sensor is top of windscreen, looks like a solar cell on the outside.

Yep its the sun load sensor for the electronic climate control fitted to Titaniums and some others. Basically it detects sunlight and adjusts the temperature to take the extra heat generated by it into account.

I thought it was the light sensor?

Only even seen the rain sensor at the top of the screen.....?

They are 2 seperate things in the same housing, rain sensor uses some sort of Photoreactive device to detect rain and the lights works in a similar way, lack of light cuts power.

If it is for climate control then it has never worked for me, lol.

I always find myself having to adjust the temp depending on whether the sun is shining in the car.

Probably right, they aren't the best of things, I personally think all they adjust is fan speed and not temperature.

I'm almost certain there's something in the manual that says it's the sun load sensor for the climate control, and there's a warning not to cover it with anything (that would make the climate control think there's no sun and not provide enough cooling).

I have always thought that it was the receiver for the Infered central locking, If it's not, then where are those receivers ?.

As above it is the sun load sensor for A/C

The remotes are radio, not I/R.

Central locking doesn't work on Infrared.
