How To Cut Down My Gear Lever

Featured Replies

Hi guys I wanna cut down my gear lever by about 2 inches anyone know how to do this

Old school way was to take a hacksaw to the lever and hack away, I done a friends car a few years ago and used a dremel with a cutting disc, just make sure you cover your console, seats etc as you don't want to mark your interior

As said above hacksaw, thats probably the best way as you wont get any sparks flying around which would mark your interior, where as if you used a cutting disc you would.

Or you could take the gear stick off and save the hassle of making a mess.

What about adding extra thread cause once cut down to the size I want there won't be any thread left for the gear knob

There are tools you can use to re thread but most people I know either use the push on gear knob or glue the old one on, I have seen someone put electrical tape on the lever then push the gear knob on as well

Use a die cutting kit to cut a new thread, just make sure you do it straight or else the knob will be wonky.

Don't suppose you know what size die I'd need for a mk6 08 fiesta?

I cut mine down on my Mondeo, i just cut a bit off the thread on the gearstick, probably about 30mm, by using a hacksaw and masking up the console, that way there was a bit left of the original thread - i then drilled the inside of the gearknob o it sat lower (so the gearstick was right up inside the gearknob, nearly at the top, inside ) the 2 things together shortened the gearstick/ knob considerably

i also had to modify the lift-up reverse lever

i then re-positioned the cable on the gearstick - as far up as possible to get the shortest throw (front to back) this put the gearstick forward so i had to re-adjust it on the gearbox

i had a quick-shifter but prefer this DIYone - it is "perfect" for length and throw and does not look "extreme"

I guess the only way to do it would be to cut it and re thread it. Seems kinda pointless though for a couple of inches?

Few inches is a lot for some people.

I really am struggling to read this thread with a straight face!!

Perhaps I should get my mind out of the gutter...
