Strange Whine When Reversing

Featured Replies

We noticed a strange whine when reversing our Focus yesterday. It lasts for 1-2 seconds and then goes away. It doesn't do it all the time.

Any idea what it could be?

We have only had the car just over a week and it is a 12 plate.

Should I be worried?

If you could get a soundbite up it will help?

As I said initially, it has only done it twice - both times happening yesterday.

I have taken the car out this morning again to try and replicate the problem and cannot. I have tried reversing straight, with lock on both left and right

and cannot get the car to do it.I even tried reversing up hill and down hill.

All I will say is the sound was like a large rusty iron door opening. The sound lasted for 1-2 seconds and then stopped.

I was reversing into a parking space, when it happened. Moved the car forward again and back into the space and it did not do it the second time.

Having bought the car second hand from a main dealer, I just want to make sure I haven't bought a lemon, otherwise they can have it back !

This is fairly close to the noise I was hearing... Very loud..

Sticky brakes?

  • Author

This happened before any brakes were applied.... Or does that not matter?

If they aren't releasing properly a pad(or shoe) may be just touching the disc(or drum depending on whether it's the front ones or back) and making the sound. Just a suggestion ;)

I think it must have been a one off - its not done it since....
