Would like advice on how to tweak a little more power out of the engine of my 1.8 zetec without having to go mad with purcheses, any ideas guys?

To be honest on a Naturally Aspirated petrol engine, the best thing you can do is give it a good service. Oil, filter, fuel filter, uprated air filter, exhaust tweaks, high performance spark plugs, HT Leads and coil pack. These are probably the best that you will get out of the engine for cheaper upgrades, alternatively your looking at a new straight through exhaust, bigger bore etc. All of these will probably get you a good few more horses (even if you get a terraclean service that will release a few more!). at a guess, if you get all of that done, you could probably be looking at around 40hp more than you currently have (basing that on the age of the car, the inevitable muck that would have built up) thats not to say your going to get the factory spec + 40hp.

Most of it you could do yourself, most of it is standard service items, the exhaust is the only thing you might struggle with.
