Question About Electrics

Featured Replies

Basicaly I'm wondering if it's best to switch the positive or negative? (12v DC). I have drls (picture) that I want to be able to switch on/off.

Being a sparky i would usualy switch the live but I know with some electronics it's best to switch the neg.

Personally I'd switch the negative but either way wouldn't really matter ? Plus side of switching the positive is you can cut the feed instantly if it shorts or something on an earth.

may sound like a daft q, but isnt the whole idea of drl to come on whilst engine running? couldnt you splice into the sidelight/headlight wiring loom?

if it was me, i'd split the live and leave the ground constant

If I was to pick a feed up from splicing, you'd want the ignition live so there drl as they should be and have no switch

I've got it wired up to a relay. It comes on with the ignition and also sidelight, when I put dipped beam on it dims by 30%. I just want a switch so I can easily turn it of just in case in need to

Just run a straight switch into the positive then to keep it simpler

I'll just switch the pos then, don't think it'll make any odds. Also it's no harder either way as I've got a two core already ran from inside the car to the engine bay so it's 6 and two 3s

Also there not official DRLs there just led rings

Yeh may aswell, you are meant to switch the negative and have the fuse on the positive i think ? But it won't matter aslong as the outcome is the same it'll be easier doing the positive feed.

Yaeah, I'll just switch it after the fuse

Switch it before the fuse I think ?

Yeah, I guess. Now that I think about it it would probably blow eventually if switching before it haha

Hahaa yeh then if there's a problem when you switch the live it'll pop the fuse before it goes any further :)

The fuse should be as close to the power source as possible. Switch the positive (if you need a switch)
