Oily Water...

Featured Replies

Hi folks

I'm helping out my old Sea Cadet unit by cleaning up their motorboat. Unfortunately, somebody has neglected to notice the leaky fuel tank. So I'm faced with dirty bilge water - somewhere in the region of 300 litres+ of badly contaminated water...

Anyone any ideas where I can safely dispose of it?

Local recycling centre won't touch it

I think your going to need to look through the yellow pages to be honest. At work we use several companies, one of which disposes of contaminated fluids with a tanker and can empty tanks or bilges but it won't be cheap I'm afraid.

That's what I was afraid of. The unit isn't exactly flush with money...might just have to tell the CO to send out begging letters lol

List it on ebay as a collection only item. Someone might bid as a joke then legally have to claim it. Failing that a nearby drain, toilet or "accidentally" have it leak into the sea/river?

On a more serious note, are there any people around where the boat is kept that may know somewhere to take it, or even any facilities nearby that deal with that kind of thing?

Sounds like you need to extend your search, call a few other local tipping points, you might find one a few miles away that accepts oil / wanter / similar!

None of the sites in the county will accept it - and it's a little awkward to transport!!

Called the Unit CO and her solution is to track down a 45gal drum and work it out from there lol

What is she going to do with the other 95 litres lol

Thinking out loud a couple of oil drums could hold it untill you figure out how to dispose of it - eagh large drum can hold almost 160 liters so 2 should be enough

The other thing im thinking is it may be able to reduce the volume of liquid by filtering or evaporating the water/ contaminents, for example boiling the water off or seperating the floating components

A 45 gallon steel drum holds 205 litres.

Our local Harbours Authority deals with the waste oil from boats/ships. Might be worth asking your local authority?

ABP aren't interested as long as it doesn't end up in the dock

If I was at work, it'd be really easy...just drop it down the bilge and let the oily water separator do its thing. Coulpe hundred litres wouldn't make any difference to the ships records lol
