How do you know if any vehicle is canbus or non canbus?

i had no idea what canbus what, but a quick google search tells me that its part of the OBD 2 which has been standard on most european cars since 2004.

CANBUS is the communication method of the car. its basically the system that links all the sensors and modules of the car together. CAMNUS is also a term used to describe the warning systems such as those that suggest your light bulbs are out

To add to the above it's the application of a communication system (or systems) to allow the various modules to operate, transfer data etc with an aim to minimise (or at least reduce) the amount of cabling used.

Very basic example, for drivers door switchpack on a Focus mk2 facelift (with door modules) has only 3 wiring connections - power, ground and data/canbus. Operating the switches produces a coded signal which the drivers door module receives and interprets to either operate it's own window/mirrors or then communicates similar signal off to another door module as needed.

On lower spec models without door modules, from the switchpack, there are 8 cables for electric mirror adjustment alone, then several more for operating the windows. Expand this throughout the vehicle and you save a lot of weight, cost and packaging space by these reductions.

While modern car looms still appear to be a nightmare of wiring spaghetti they'd be much worse without using canbus. Course as demand drives more and more electrical features into cars loom sizes still tend to grow.

so theres no quick and easy way to tell if your car is canbus or not

What car is it and what year?

In some cases the easiest answer is to remove the brake light bulbs and turn the engine on and apply the brakes, the car will probably tell you your brake lights are out if its canbus (warning) activated. Otherwise, the CANBUS is purely the communications network in the car and is used solely for engine and vehicle management without user warning.
