OT - SLR Night time photo's

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Some of you may know i was after a DSLR last week, i finaly got one at the weekend. It's taken a bit to get used to it but i'm very very happy about how well it takes photos! The following pictures were taken last night, without a flash and had a shutter speed between 10 and 30 seconds. An ISO of 200 - 400 was also used.

I know they wont be the best pictures in the world, but for somebody who's only owned a SLR for a matter of days, i think i did well :)

And one of my cat :)

Not sure about the pic of the cat but then I am not really a cat lover, but the car looks great - although I would have to say that I can't tell the difference between the 3 pics.

So you going to put some more pics up then?

Theres a small difference in light between the first and second picture. (look at the light on the bricks etc) and as for the cat one, its all about detail and focusing on the main object - in this case the cat and nothing else. SLR camera's take photos in much greater detail compared to normal digital camera's.

Awwww the cat is gorgeous! :)

Great photos, Mark, both car and cat look lovely!

Glad you are enjoying your new DSLR - what did you go for in the end? I've a suspicion that it could be a Pentax - am I right?

I did go for a Pentax, how did you guess?! It's a Pentax K-M and got 2 lenses with it. One is 18-55 mm and the other is 50-200mm

The cat's wicked--very much clearer than the car picture but I guess that was intentional?

Cute cat :)

Yes it was. I was using the natural light without any flash involved. The car picture was taken at around 10pm last night :)

I wish I could claim psychic powers or even just plain genius, but it was the IMGP part of the file name that I recognised! I nearly took a punt at which model (which I *can't* tell from the filename, and I didn't dig deeper in any available file EXIF info, which might be accessible and would give the game away!). Anyway, I actually would've hazarded a guess at the K-m as it's a great choice as a first DSLR and is the most compact one Pentax have made so far. Those two lenses that it came with are excellent too.

I'm always pleased when people don't just go for the almost automatic "Canon or Nikon" choice because although those are fine products, easy to find everywhere, the other firms like Pentax and Olympus make great cameras too (and often innovate more than the really big firms). As long as they find buyers, they'll be able to carry on doing that.

Enjoy the Pentax! You can also use loads of second-hand Pentax-fitting lenses on it as well as new ones, so there's lots of scope.
