2 Problems

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, I need some advise pls...

First thing, I have a rattling sound that seems to be coming from the back end drivers side. Its more noticeable when going over bumps. I had a mechanic at KwikFit check It out but said he couldn't find anything....could be the exhaust shroud he said??

The second thing is, when I put my foot down in 2nd and 3rd gear I hear a whining that lasts a second or two, just started in the last week.

Anyone else had these issues and know the cause?

Car specs:

Focus Zetec S TDCI 2L

2010 plate

73k on the clock

Thanks for your help :)

If one of the exhaust heatshields is loose you'll also hear it from outside when you shut a door or close the tailgate.

Cheers mate. I don't hear anything when closing doors or boot just when going over speed bumps or crappy road surfaces.

what kinda rattle does it sound like?, I have two really annoying ones thre both coming from the rear drivers side area. one sounds quite high up above the seat, ive had the suspension apart and replaced the top mount but ill be buggered if I can find it, it almost sounds plastic but not quite,. the other one is in the door somewhere, heavy base can also set it off. Apparently on that side of the car its quite common for the handbrake cable to pop loose and bang around a bit, although mine seems fine there as well. good luck finding yours!

Its a tinny sound if that makes sense?! Ive had the wheels off, checked the roll bar, suspension but buggered if I know what it is.

Thanks for your suggestions :)

check the rear linkages, and for the wooshing check the turbo/intercooler hoses for splits/cracks

problem with sound is that it can travel from the source to other places, ive pulled the side panels out from the boot up to the door then up the pillar but which is where it sounds like its coming from my per perspective, ive had someone in the back keeping an ear open and they put it above the seatbelt but ive had all that off without any luck, rocking the car doesn't do it, but jumping in the boot does.

I thought it might be the dust shield on the shock, so my next job will be to remove it or pad it so it cant move side to side. failing that I may replace the shocks, apparently if the coil is not seated in its rubber boot properly it can also make a noise, as can the roll bar drop links, brushes, hand brake cable and top mount.

The top mount ive heard is quite common to go, when I replaced mine you could clearly see it had been over tightened on one side crushing the rubber allowing the metal to tap the chassis, didn't help but that rubber was their for a reason I suppose. Its a mystery, but as someone once said, a Focus wouldn't be a focus without a rattle somewhere.
