Mk2 Focus 2007 1.8Tdci Whiny Noise

Featured Replies

Hello, I dont know if anyone can help but last night when I was driving home I had a cog with an explanation mark warning light on dash (engine malfunction light according to manual). I turned of engine and turned back on and light had gone. Even with light off there was no difference in the way my focus drove, like there was nothing wrong. This morning when I started the car and rpm just over idle (1000-1200rpm) there is a whining noise and can only hear this noise when in 1st and 2nd gear at low revs. Also in neutral and if I change down gear or slow down to go around a corner. It isnt that loud but very annoying :). The car still drives as it should and the engine malfunction light hasnt appeared again. I plugged in my obd reader but no codes showed up.

any help will be much appreciated. Many thanks - conor

Hello, the best way I can describe the sound is like a bus, like a release of air or hydraulics instead of a whining noise like a belt. I dont know if this helps.

many thanks - conor

Sounds like a loose or split boost hose somewhere.

Thanks, I will have a look tomorow. I did check the intercooler hose for cracks but didnt check if loose.

If u get someone to rev car while u look at hoses they should all expand out

Thanks, would it be the hoses to do with turbo, could it be air intake or something.

Most likely turbo hose but Ya can't rule anything out at this stage

Hello, I have checked the hoses but can not find any cracks or loose. Today as I stopped to fill up, I couldnt turn the engine back on, dead battery, I push started it. And drove back home. With engine turned on battery reads 11.4v when high rev 12v. I then took it out for about 25mins so car was running for about 35mis in total (11.4v) and turned of engine. I then checked volts on battery with car turned off and it read 0.03v. Does this mean my alterantor is ok and my battery is duff. Also could this be linked to the noise?

Should be over 14 alternator needs replacing get battery checked also as for noise more info needed maybe try record it

Update, I replaced my alternator the other day (after a few hours of trying to remove top bolt on alternator, had to remove alternator/air con pump bracket to get it out :D) I now am reading over 14volts, also which I was very happy about is that the noise I described has gone so it appears to just be my alternator.

Thanks for the help and advice, much appreciated.
