Focus 2006 Both Headlamp Not Working Problem

Featured Replies

Hi All

My first ever post on the Ford Owners Club forum! Please be easy on me.... ;-)

Ok so I have an issue with my Focus and I am unsure exactly what has caused it to occur.

Had an issue with my Front driver side dimmer bulb which had blown, so I replaced it with a new one, no problem. That now works fine.

However since I have changed this dimmer bulb both my front 2 main head lamps are now not working. I have checked the bulbs, they haven't blown and I have also checked some of the fuses on the front passenger junction box fuse board.

I have looked at the following fuses and none have blown:

Fuse 37 - Main beam left side

Fuse 38 - main beam right side

Fuse 49 - Lighting control battery supply

Fuse 60 - dipped beam right side

Fuse 61 - dipped beam left side

I am confident this is a fuse that has just blown, as that is the only explanation I can think that would cause this (unless anyone has any ideas of something else).

I went to 2 local garages, told them what I had checked and they think it could be some sort of electrical problem if the bulbs and fuses are ok, but I just dont understand how that could be, all I did was change a bulb.

My question really is

  • are there any other fuses I should check?
  • Could it be a shortcircuit somewhere
  • anything else I could check myself

I can confirm the lights were working before I changed them and all other lights and electrical inside and outside the car are working.

Any advice on this would be most appreciated.

Thanks

I always thought bulbs are like tires you only change them in pairs! did you change both dimmer bulbs?

No just the driver side, passenger side bulb was fine.

You may have disturbed a wire while swapping the bulb.

Try going over the headlight wires ensuring they are all connected properly and that the large multiblock is seated fully with no disturbed pins.

Headlight bulbs do have the annoying habit of going in pairs, I always swap them in pairs and keep the old working bulb for emergency swaps if necessary.

To exclude a blown fuse you should check all fuses in both the Battery Junction Box and the Interior Junction Box. The easiest/fastest way to do this is a continuity check with a multimeter.

If there are no broken fuses or lightbulbs the problem may be caused by a defective GEM module. The GEM module is integrated into the Interior Junction Box and controls most of the light functions. i have seen a few times before that a defective GEM module caused this kind of problems.

Thanks for the replies.

Just an update. Even though I was confident that the bulbs on visual looked fine, when I replaced it with a new bulb it all worked.

So it looks like the bulbs had gone at the same time, the only thing I can assume is when I changed the dimmer bulb I interrupted something and that caused both bulbs to pop as I know right before I changed them they were working fine.

Just glad its not expensive bill with a dealer and I can get some cheap bulbs from ebay to resolve.

Hopefully this might help someone in the future.
